I have a very nice, painted table at home with hills and trees built right in. I will not be getting back to my own house for the foreseeable future. Cathie and the kids will visit me on evenings and weekends, but I will be unable to travel over to my house for anything but a quick visit. I also can't really bring a 9' by 6' gaming table over to this house. (Besides, everybody else is still using it) I am going to buy a mat and set up and break down in the spare room as needed. I have a couple of folding tables that come close to 4' x 6', and I play a lot of Warhammer, so that is the mat size I am going to get. I also have decided on a natural looking mat for my first one, so that I can play Warhammer, Warmahordes or any other game I pick up. I can stick buildings on it or any of my scenery.
I am looking at a Frontline grasslands mat which would run about $80-$85 shipped, or there is a company on ebay selling vinyl mats for $40 shipped and Cloth mats for $50 shipped. Whatever mat I buy will likely get cut in half and sent off to a couple of different colleges in the Fall, so I hate to lay down the big bucks. It will also get draped or folded over a smaller card table for times I can't go to the spare room to play. My wallet says just buy the vinyl mat, play on it and treat it as disposable after a year or so. My mind thinks the cloth mat will conform better to being draped over different tables. I have an old '50s era oversize card table (2 1/2' by 5') with a variegated, green vinyl top that serves as an improvised gaming table, but I may not be able to use it much after Monday. We are getting a bunch of equipment delivered to the home and will have to rearrange our space a lot. I may be tossing whatever I get onto a small round dining table and playing that way. We'll have to get a bit creative with deployment zones and missions if we do that. The patterns listed for the vinyl and cloth mats are called "Moss", but they seem to come in a couple of different shades. Should I just grab the vinyl mat and play on it, or will it fall apart if we drape it over table edges and the like. I am thinking the cloth one might be a nice compromise, but I am wondering about the durability of putting scenery and miniatures on it. It would make rolling the dice a bit quieter and that may be a serious consideration, as when I play solo, I have to be very quiet.
Any thoughts?
