I played a few games with Calaban + Dracodile in January (figuring Parasite allows you to play a battlegroup w/out a Wrassler). He was ok, but I never got to live the dream on feat so I shelved him until spell support in the form of Soul Slave and Boneshrine hit the scene.
But I don’t really see anyone playing him now. Is he... bad? Or just outshone by Maelok & Jaga Jaga & Barney(s) & Rask?

My understanding is very much the latter. Jaga-Jaga in particular appears to favour very similar builds (heavy on the ranged presence) but doesn't need as much support nor need to land offensive spells. Just sitting back and casting Signs and Portents every round gives her list about the same output for a lot less effort.

I've been playing Calaban in WWFF as part of my pair for the last couple of months and it's been going pretty well. He has a really nice general tool box kit that can be applied to a big variety of matchups.
I know the preference of a lot of folks is to play him with a ton of guns but I've been sticking with a more rounded approach. Nyss flexability have been really good with him.
I've also gotten good use from his feat. I've had those dream feat turns for an assassination or attrition but even if I just get to swap parasite and still have a few transfers it's been good.
Dark power makes his spell assassination or infantry clear power on feat significantly better than it might originally seem.
I haven't played with Jaga-Jaga yet but she looks less personally involved than what I find Calaban contributing in most games.

I have Calaban in assembly stage now, but I'm hesitant to run him, as I feel like I need a bunch of models I don't have in order to get the most value with him. So that "needing support" phrase rings pretty true.

Personally I like Calaban but the more I play him the more I realize that I could just copy and paste his list into Jaga and it would be better 70% of the time. One thing that he provides that is hard to come by is massive amounts of ranged RFP on feat turn. I liked him into ghost fleet but that is less of an issue now.
