Mercanary and Minion models being used within theme forces for unique benifits and rolls?
Im curious due to a conversation a friend and i had reveiwing a Khador "Wolves of Winter" list i had constructed. The topic was on my choice to include a unit of Steelhead Halbadiers with Vaachev 1 over a third unit of Doom Reaver Swordsmen.
The idea was a 14 point combo with the Greylord Ternion unit to produce a expendable cloud screen to allow my army to advance through shooting territory. Valachev 1 was free in theme.
It wprked out well in out game as the wall protected my Doom Reaver Swordsmen on aproch and allowed for a flexible unit to hold zones. (Ice cage was a great mat fixer for the unit as well)

I want to pick 2 options. Solos are usually to fill a specific role to shore up specific weaknesses in the list, such as including Ragman to help with the low POW in the list. Others can of course have specific synergies, such as including Gorman with a cloud wall caster to have a larger wall. Units will usually be for synergies as they are most likely taken for their combat potential or expendability, for instance taking Croe's Cutthroats with a Telekinesis caster. Though others, like Aiyana and Holt will be for their specific role.

I agree with Gamingdevil, I take mercenaries for two reasons. One, they bring something to the list that the list was lacking, like help with damage output or a shield guard. The other is helping with what the skew of the theme is. For example, Wrong eye and snap jaw in a defense skew theme, as adding in signs and portents to satyxis raiders can be mean.

I take them as a stand alone faction. I have a hard time letting Magnus and Macbain go.

I play both Mercs and Minions as stand alone factions. I also sometimes takes solos in other lists, where I think they have value.

I am a Merc player. When I play my Menoth, I have so many plans and so little room that I can't always fit the Mercs in unless I am going to build a list specifically for them.

I used to not take mercs in another faction, I would occasionally take other factions casters + jacks with my mercs . Then mk3 came and jack points went up and made that tough. Coming back and now these theme things make that even harder as I start up again. (I started playing warmachine with mercs)
