I know it's Thags special sword and the only way they can slice off Athanc shards. Does anyone know where it came from or how he got it?

Great question - though Everblight is supposed to be this master of blight... it seems that without Rapture, he can't make more Athanc shards because they'll turn into dragons too?

It is a weapon made for his previous champion. Everblight's athanc was captured and imprisoned by the elves after they killed his body. He lured Thagrosh to him and then sent him after it. Reference: warmachine.lexicanum.com/wiki/Everblight

IIRC it was crafted by the blighted kings of Morrdh when Everblight ruled the country, before messing with Ios. Basically a weapon designed to fight his brother dragons while he was hiding beneath Morrdh, and the only weapon to be able to cut athancs.
Another place where it comes into play is the making of Typhon, the only beast with an Athanc shard. Thagrosh cuts his own Athanc to craft Typhon. IIRC Thagrosh becomes epic at the same time.

Rapture is from the Black Kingdom of Morrdh, which Everblight had previously occupied prior to losing his body in Ios. In Morrdh, he was something like a god or powerful patron, and warlords would vie for his blessing and the use of his dragonspawn.
Morrdh was a powerful kingdom, the birthplace of necromancy as far as anyone knows, and presumably had the power to craft such powerful relics as Rapture and the original Hex Razors that Hex Hunters now use. Everblight remembered Rapture from his time in Morrdh and had Thagrosh retrieve it so he could begin his plans.
The important thing about rapture is not that it can carve an Athanc. That's uncommon but not unique (Toruk did it by himself). What is important about rapture is that separating the Athanc with it doesn't create a new dragon. Everblight knew what would happen if he just broke his athanc apart like Toruk did. Rapture allowed him to shave off shards that didn't become autonomous dragons, and this allows him to divide his essence among his warlocks. So long as any of his warlocks persist, so does Everblight, and that's what makes him so dangerous.
