You don't need a seraph unless you're hinging on the alpha to carry your game (which I don't consider a good idea in Mk3 either way). Outside of that it's a powerful strategic tool with many applications beyond just threat range. -You can use it to shoot and back-up afterwards. -You can use it to nudge around terrain. -You can use it to go from being outside the 3" LOS bubble in forests to being within it before activating. -You can use it to disengage. -You can use it to change facing. -You can use it to move a little and still forfeit movement. -You can use it to shuffle models to block/unblock LOS after activations. -You can use it to toe-in or toe-out in almost any situation outside of activations.
Or you can just use to to scare and threaten your opponent with the risk that anything in your army might suddenly have +2" of threat range even if you don't plan on actually doing it. Having a threat buff where you need it is as good as having it across your whole army in many cases.
So is the seraph always worth it? No. There are about as many lists I take it as there are lists where I don't take it. In some cases it will have a significant impact on the whole list, in other cases it won't have as much impact as something else. It's a safe bet that if you're going beast-heavy and not taking too much 'tech' already, a Seraph is a good inclusion.

Honestly, nudging around terrain and into forests for LOS is very very big. Having your flying beats project threat around obstructions is massive.
