So, the wife is interested in wargaming (or at least the models / painting aspect). But I also want her to play. So we're going for concepts she likes first and aesthetics second.
So I thought I'd get her a list of quick rundowns on all the factions and see which concept, if any, piques her interest. From there, we'd go over her interest in the looks of her chosen factions.
Anyway, the list:
1) Steampunk America with lightning powers
2) Steampunk soviet Russia with occult pseudo science
3) Steampunk crusaders with flame throwers
4) Steampunk undead / creepy pirates
5) Human-hating, magician-hunting Elves
6) Art deco / world of tomorrow steampunk machine-people
7) Fairy tale / nightmare creatures from hell
8) Native American / Scottish Trolls
9) Civilization hating druids, werewolves, living statues, and feral people who eat hearts
10) Creepy blighted dragon people
11) Slave-owning, elephant-torturing, desert vampires/dark-elves
12) Stereotypical steampunk Pirates
13) Stereotypical Sword-For-Hire Mercenaries
14) Stereotypical steampunk Dwarves
15) Creepy human-centipede machine-science sewer people
16) Voodoo swamp gator-men
17) Crazy pig-men with Dr. Frankenstein / Dr. Moreau science
Does this pretty much cover all of the factions (and sub factions of Mercs/Minions)? My knowledge of some faction concepts is better than others. Any suggestions?

I'll just say right off the bat if she is definitely interested in modeling/painting but on the fence about actually playing then I would suggest that she just picks something she is excited to paint instead of a playstyle/concept.

I would agree with Gumba that if she is more interested in painting than playing then she shouldn't worry about mechanics, but your descriptions are pretty apt from an aesthetic or gameplay standpoint. Maybe add that Ret is more scifi/anime but otherwise those do a pretty good job of describing the look and feel. Alternatively just take her to the gallery at privaterpress.com or the wall of the local game shop and let her look around.

Whenever I see the models for the elowaryr swordsnen I imagine a butload Of Intense anime Fight scenes from shows I have watched in the past. Same thing with The Guy with the big Sword. Can’t remember his name. As far as the OP. Go for Aesthetics first. Rules second. If you get a faction you don’t like the look of much your not going to enjoy painting and assembling the models

Her tastes are pretty wide and varied so the aesthetics, while important, won't be a big deal. And, as I said, we'll go over the aesthetics too to find one she likes. But I'd like her to choose an army she likes on concept, then aesthetics.

Then, yea, you're pretty much good. That list seems fine.

My knowledge of some faction concepts is better than others. Any suggestions? 1) Cygnar isn't really America. They're a feudal monarchy. I would just describe it that way, as there is no democracy at play, nor is there really anything "American" about them. For Cygnar, I'd say "Electric techno-wizards, strong economy, and gun mages." 2) Khador is more a of Czarist Russia (they have an emperor and a feudal society). I'd say "poor but sturdy eastern european country with more people than money, and more ambition than morals." 5) "magician" hunting? That's kind of wierd. I think of people hunting David Copperfield or Houdini... They hunt wizards. I would say, think elven fringe terrorists; something out of Ghost in the Shell, but elven. 8) There's really nothing american indian about trolls except that they live in a tribal organization and some ride buffalo; one could draw parallels to the early U.S. treatment of the native peoples in terms of displacement, but that is getting a little too deep. I would just say "tribal, blue people who are very strong with crazy regeneration abilities." 9) Circle doesn't hate civilization, per se; they know that too much civilization will cause the Devourer Wurm to return to Caen and destroy the world. They are eco-terrorists who use werewolfs, golems, and wild tribes to combat the spread of civilization." Also, good luck getting her into the game, sounds like fun! Edit: Also, for Legion, I wouldn't call them "blighted dragon people," because the Nyss and Ogrun are not dragon people, they are elves and Ogrun. I would say they are Dark Elves or blighted elves with twisted Dragonspawn warbeasts.

For Cygnar, I'd say "Electric techno-wizards, strong economy, and gun mages." More like WWI England with Electric techno-wizards and gun mages, except for displacing all the Trollblood tribes. 8) There's really nothing american indian about trolls except that they live in a tribal organization and some ride buffalo; one could draw parallels to the early U.S. treatment of the native peoples in terms of displacement, but that is getting a little too deep. I would just say "tribal, blue people who are very strong with crazy regeneration abilities." Considering how much displacement happens with them, and it is a strong reason for them to come together in a way the American tribes never did, I would say the American tribal reference is a good one. Add in a mix of the Scottish theme (kilts, bagpipes, and cabers), and that describes the ascetics and drives of the Trollbloods pretty well.

For me Cygnar is, astetically, a historical mix of sorts. Colonial America/England with tricorns and flintlocks (gun mages), WW1 trench warfare (trenchers), and early industrial Tesla-esque steampunk. Plus a couple knights for flavor. Its actually what drew me to them in the first place.

Don't forget the strong Nordic influence on the Trolls, many don't mind the cold weather, and the names are quite reminiscent of medieval Scandinavian conventions (Skaldi Bonehammer, FFS!).
The Skorne are the most martial, insomuch they have their own philosophy that dictates how they fight/train/make war, too, hence the faint hint of samurai about them.
For Ret, human hating is probably understating it a bit... they hate everyone, just that they hate humans that little bit more.

You might also want to point out the "Justified Zealotry" of Retribution. They are having children born *without souls* in a place where there is KNOWLEDGE of souls, as opposed to belief in souls. They have KNOWLEDGE of Gods, and their Gods are dying. They are fighting for survival. They are fighting to ensure their children's children will not be black-eyed shells, devoid of meaning or purpose. They fight a near-impossible war to avoid certain annihilation via abomination. Worse than extinction, would be soulless existence. [For them. No real-world parallels are drawn here. Just enjoying a fictional universe. ]

From a gameplay perspective, does the wife plan on going the full army/SR route? If so, it'd probably be pertinent to narrow down even further from factions to the themes they are being broken down into.
If not, there's also the option of playing CoI which would allow much greater flexibility in model selection while still retaining the choices for gameplay.
P.S. I wish PP would do another Rumble format, but one that didn't suck.
