So I recently came back from Bonescon (the old Smogcon) and had loads of games. I couldn't help but think that the meta had passed my very settled pairing by and I had some massive gaps in my coverage, and I'm hoping to get a bit of inspiration from you all please.
What's your current competitive pairing, and what do you think each list covers?

Yeah I agree. What did you run? What do you think they handle? What issues do they struggle with?

lol the idea was that people just listed their pairings and we could all have a discussion about what works for them, but okay I'll start then.
The pairing I was using was Thags 1 Oracles with two thrones (which I didn't think was a great list but it sure was fun) and Lylyth3 Oracles. I found there was a gap in the pairing when it came to Grymkin in general, Minion gator spam (and the upcoming CID Khador too)
So my current idea is:
Abby2: Menoth (except Harby), Convergence, Trolls, Grymkin, possible crocs drop, though probably not a good one. Lylyth 3: Cygnar, Khador (except old witch), Cryx, Retribution, Circle, Skorne
Dangers for me are Old Witch infantry lists, Harbinger, Gator box spam and Troll champion Madrak lists. Basically, infantry...

For awhile it was Thags1 double thrones and Abby2. Mainly Thags would see warmachine and Abby2 hordes.
With the pending release of Primal Terrors I think Thags will be replaced by Anamag or Kallus1, so right now testing out what the best pair would be for either of those. So far it’s Abby2, Fyanna2, or kallus2 cotd

Well, right off the bat it seems to me that Thags 1, Lylyth 3 both in oracles could struggle a bit in the current SR packet. Depends a bit on what else in your lists I suppose.
I was running Twins, Lylyth 3 as my pairing. Twins are excellent in the current SR and were my main drop against 80% of the field with L3 filling in problem matchups like Cygnar. Currently I'm experimenting with Thags 1 in cotd and Vayl 2 out of theme as a pairing.

This is great thanks Jediguru. What do you usually put in your twins list?

I've got some eye brow raises with my Twins list since it was out of theme. I've done particularly well with this list both in local tourneys as well as larger con events. It doesn't play itself and takes time to get proficient with it, but it's very effective.
(Twins 2) Saeryn & Rhyas, Talons of Everblight [+24] - Seraph [14] - Typhon [24] - Zuriel [18] Annyssa Ryvaal [8] Strider Deathstalker [4] Swamp Gobber Chef [1] Blackfrost Shard [9] Blighted Nyss Swordsmen (max) [15] Hellmouth [6]

Hahaha you truly are a pioneer. Twins aren't a bad shout for all of my current woes actually. Might have to give them a bash.

Ha. I don't know about all that. It does bother me though that so few players venture out of themes in their list building. Losing out on the free points can be a big deal in some matchups, but it's not as big of a deal as people make it out to be even in high level competitive play. Furthermore, some of our locks just don't jive very well with our themes. Twins, Vayl 2, and Lylyth 1 are a few examples that I think are typically just better when ran out of theme with access to our entire faction of models.

I do agree that Abby2 cover quite a few matchups for us very well. Especially grymkin, and medium base spam. Trolls especially and now gators too.

I got smashed recently by "dreamer's infantry gunline" Abby2 crushes dark menagerie, not really sure about Bump since it’s less commonly played. Dreamer infantry gunline seems very strange though and not really optimal to what she can do... Id wager that matchup is just unfamiliarity with an uncommon build and would get easier with time, but I don’t really know the list.

It’s the scenarios that make themes mandatory imo. You need those extra models for capping flags, contesting, etc. I’ve had success with Twins and Vayl2 in Oracles... Lylyth1 is a bit a harder.

bward, you're just essentially saying the free points make it mandatory in your opinion. Of course extra models on the table can make it easier to win a game. That's a no brainer. My argument is that the restrictions and extra points you get are often contrary to what models a particular lock would prefer to take in a given optimized list. IMO Twins and Vayl 2 are not particularly optimized from a models in list standpoint in Oracles and can easily make up for lack of free points with a "better" list.
