I've been thinking on this recently and would like to hear others options on it as well. What makes a theme strong?
So most themes have 4-5 benefits.
1. Can take mercs and minions, pretty much the same so not much to discus there.
2. take X points of Ys give you free Z. This is again going to be largely similar, with the lower X is and the more you want to take Y and Z making it better.
3. Some thematic addition. In some cases it makes sense like in SotN and really pulls the theme together and some like unlimited runebearers it is not nearly as good.
4. little bonus. Not theme defining but helpful, these seems to be deployment or fury management based. It seems like the goal here is to help sure up the weakness from the restrictions.
5. Theme defining buff or terrain. I have to say more often then not I am not a big fan of terrain as the bonus here. Triggering prowl is big if you can do that, but in terms of opportunity cost it feels like you are missing out.
Shamelessly stealing this thread from the Trolls forum and adding some thoughts of the themes I've played.
COTW: Free points up to 18 so that's pretty good, +1 to go first and Cost 1 less animus are amazing benefits, however the models allowed in this theme means your scoring units (outside of mercs) are shifting stones so that's less good and it is a theme that revolves around generally expensive living beasts. Verdict: well-balanced theme.
Wild Hunt: Free points although getting them/the choice of free models is generally difficult ie most of my lists end up with 2 free UAs, wish Morraig could be free. Tracker is ok although annoying considering the majority of our heavies lacking pathfinder, the ambushing WoO are very nice. Unfortunately the theme is lacking in blackclads, the wilder and the wayfarers would make this theme so good...I digress. It's a theme I quite enjoy playing but could be better.
Having a lot less experience in the other two I'll let better minds go over them but would love to hear people's thoughts
