In MKII: Big, angry, Ogrun that hit stupidly hard. Sometimes you just need to hit a thing with POW 20+ about 30 times in a row. Sometimes you need to hit a lot of things in a lot of places with POW 20+. Ogrun could do both while being moderately survivable. Also seeing peoples faces, when they were happy to play against Legion and you turned up with 24 Heavy Infantry (all 8 boxes) was amusing. While amused proceed to stomp them as they had no idea how to deal with that.
In MKIII: Pretty much the same. People saw Ogrun, were happy they had something easy to shoot. Then got roflestomped by angry Ogrun. It turns out, they are just hard enough to kill to make it awkward. Overcommit or kill fewer than anticipated, there is no middle ground. Also: Doesn't really matter if you lose half the unit on the approach when 2.5 are still enough to wreck a heavy. Now they became better in every regard. It's great.

I really wasn’t looking to get into Warmahordes – but I wasn’t going to go back to GW after the large Tyranid army became invalidated. I tried Dark Eldar for a while but with no new content, the army just kinda stagnated. There was a huge going out of business sale though and the price point on WarmaHordes was very appealing. I boiled down to 2 choices… Circle or Legion… and both of those choices were simply based on aesthetics. Dragons won.
After that (early MK2 time frame?) – I really started to get into it. Eyeless sight, Pathfinder and Stealth allowed me to ‘cheat’. This made them easy to play. As soon as my meta figured out how to play against Legion (aka counter punch the glass cannon) – I had to learn to play (or still learning today). I loved that Legion was ‘beast heavy’. This was really the appeal. I could play these monstrosities. Many of my lists, I was heavily outnumbered in model count but I didn’t mind because I loved the models and playstyle. I rarely took to infantry with a few exceptions - Hex Hunters, Raptors… eventually WarSpears once the BlightBringer was released.
As far as the current state of Legion? Well, those who frequent these boards have seen me ask this question before. The response that I have held onto is ‘Constant Damage’ – don’t look for the big glass cannon, we can’t do that and legion has never been able to tank to absorb the alpha – but with a combined arms approach, we have tools to apply damage consistently.
That isn’t what brought me to Legion. But MK3 was supposed to change things – and it did. Some of it for the better (Khador, Ret, Jacks with PowerUp, etc.). One of the goals was for Legion to want to bring more infantry. I didn’t want this but I have been so invested that I kept an open mind.
I have not been impressed with the changes. We did get some power models (Hellmouth, Warlord, etc.) and that was great but then Thememachine hit. But I don’t want to wander into that topic, I rather address the question on hand (even though Themes may be a factor here).
What I want from legion… Beast heavy, fast moving, rule cheating elite models. We still have all of that. But something certainly seems missing. Maybe all that is needed is a little more cannon to our glass?
I ramble too much…

Mostly the dragon aesthetics got me into the faction in mk2. Also I loved that the faction could play beast heavy better then anyone else. For the most part the faction still lives up to this though in the current SR, it's a little harder.

Just curious, for the naysayers, what would be the premier beast faction at this point? If I were to hazard a guess, I think it'd be Skorne due to their total overhaul post Mk3 transition. Maybe some of the Doomy based PoD lists from Trolls as well.

Premier beast faction is definitely Skorne. Circle after that with Call of the Wild and Bones both being great. Probably should count Grymkin too
Really I think every Hordes faction does beasts better except Trolls

I liked the idea of powerful self sufficient beasts, and now PP wants me to play overbuffed spammed multi box infantry...
I'd rather lose a game with fun ^^

I started because I was not a huge fan of units. I liked spending a lot of time carefully placing my models and setting up a huge alpha. Not conducive to success with units, which requires you to trade resources. I don't like trading. So I played a bunch of vayl1/2, thagrosh2, and saeryn.
You could say I played legion for beast heavy yo-yos/time walks....aspects of legion not stressed in the faction anymore.

Thagrosh 2
I originally got shown the game by a Legion main in MKII. Made sense that he would tell me they were the best. I think I kind of fell for the faction initially for the shear weird occurrence where you like what's familiar. Thus, after watching him play and him summarizing the models. I felt okay with buying in. I later found that I like Circle tactics more. So I did buy into that, but my wife took over those models. Then I picked up minions which plays waaaay more like old MKII Legion is the massive number of beast I can put on the field and then +6 their damage. Lastly I've just bought into Protectorate. Reason being PoM was the first enemy I ever played my own Legion models against and to this day I felt I chose wrong. PoM is the aesthetic I like most. Their Casters, Jacks, and infantry all seem so diverse and capable.
But still, I will never stop playing Legion because of Thagrosh 2. He was the first caster I went head first into the faction for. He was always bonkers fun and here recently I just completely stripped the old crappy paint job, reassembled him better, modded him slightly, and worked tirelessly on an absolutely wonderfully clean paint job (for my skill level). He is by far the model I am most proud of now. Though I'm still terrified every time I take him out of the bag as the modded sword gave me cancer trying to get drilled and glued. Fingers crossed it's still together...
[Edit] Also Kryssa. Absolutely love playing Kryssa lists. I've made tons of them. So much fun and so easily adapted.
If I can get some more table time with Bethayne, she might also get a top 3 position in my book.

She is also super handicapped, but if you ignore that aspect and just play for neat Fusion! tricks you will very much enjoy running her. I highly recommended her for causal games.

She's the most active caster I've ever played and I love that about her. Belphagor and his animus are just fantastic (now that I know it's treated as a cloud). There is just so much you can do. I just haven't gotten the time to try all the possibilities. Right now I've only got a successful CotD list for here but I know she can do more. Like bird spam; Golab, Grotesque Rotwings, and such.

A buddy left the game back in mk2 and sold his big collection for a pittance. Back then I already had Cygnar and Skorne, but decided to buy into Legion. I wanted to use it mainly as my tournament army, as they where very strong back then.
Turns out their beasts are very easy and fast to paint, I found a unique paint scheme I really love, and it's completely replaced Skorne as my off-faction - in fact, my Legion collection is almost as big as my Cygnar one.
So I gave the faction a whirl mainly because of a good deal, but fell in love after giving it a try. The twins are my absolute favourite warnoun in the entire game now thanks to their amazing toolbox.
