Hi everyone! I'm returning to the game after many years away. I started near the start of MKII but due to lack of funds since I was just out of college; I had to give it all up. I was a Khador player then. I tried starting again about 2 1/2 years ago again with Menoth but it never really grabbed my attention like I thought it would. Well, with an influx of money and a few good years behind me and I'm ready to start again. My trusty Battle Box! I already picked up a Trencher Box and I'm awaiting several orders that include: Beth Maddox Ironclad Firefly Stormguard Journeyman Warcaster Harlan Versh I'm thinking a 50 Point list that includes the following: War Room Army Cygnar - Maddox Combined Arms Theme: No Theme Selected 50 / 50 Army Major Beth Maddox - WJ: +30 - Ironclad - PC: 12 (Battlegroup Points Used: 12) - Ironclad - PC: 12 (Battlegroup Points Used: 12) - Firefly - PC: 8 (Battlegroup Points Used: 6) Journeyman Warcaster - PC: 4 - Charger - PC: 9 Harlan Versh, Illuminated One - PC: 4 Trencher Infantry - Leader & 9 Grunts: 16 Stormguard Infantry - Leader & 9 Grunts: 15 I'm happy with it but I do wish I could find a decently priced Arlan Strangeways to replace Versh. I like versh, I think he could shine with Snipe and low point games where typical low point games have just 1-2 main units. Boosted shoots are really nice but darn it, I can't find Arlan at a decent price anywhere.. sigh. Either way, happy to be here. Expect pics as soon as stuffs painted. Have a nice day!

The first thing that I notice is that you're not playing in theme. You're mixing stormguard, trenchers, and models like Harlan who can show up in Heavy Metal. You may want to consider (at first, at least) specializing as you build up your force so that you have the option to play in theme. I've got a few suggestions depending on which you might like best:
If you decide to go Heavy Metal, I'd grab a hammersmith. It's great under Maddox's assail spell. Maybe also a Stormclad - it's fantastic with snipe, and is one of Cygnar's best jacks. I believe Maddox is a storm knight, so she'll give it a free focus if she's close enough.
If you decide to go Storm Divison, I'd suggest Stormlances first. They're fairly expensive as a unit, but they're very good. They only get better when you throw arcane shield on them. I'm also personally a fan of the stormblade infantry, although lots of people don't like them. They crack armor like weapon masters, even though they're not. If you do get them, the command attachment is a must.
If you go either Heavy Metal or Storm Division, a Storm Strider is a great choice, as it fits in either theme, and is a great model. I just got mine a few months ago, and it's in pretty much every one of my lists. Yeah - it's pricy. I guess that's why I didn't get one for the first 3 years I played.
If you go Gravediggers, I kind of don't have much advice. That's the one theme I own pretty much nothing for. Maxwell Finn, maybe?
Aside from that, the only glaring omission I see is a squire. That's another model I put in nearly every list. It gives you an extra 2" control area, which can be super-important for the area your feat covers, and it lets you re-roll missed spell attacks, which I've found to be indispensable when throwing around Stryker's earthquake for assassinations. Also, free focus ain't bad.
Arlan is also a boss.

Thanks for the advice, Just ordered some stormlances, a squire and the unit attachment for the trenchers.
As for theme forces. I just don't like the way they currently stand. They just seem like excuses to go heavily into a specific set of models. Theres no flavour, no substance and until they actually start making them to be more thematic I wont go heavily into them. I'm not gonna say i will never use them but even from a strict rules perspective, a couple of free solos (and if we're being truly honest with ourselves, thats what it's all about) don't stand a chance next to an actual balanced list. Basically, themes are gimmicks. Hopefully CID can fix that, I read somewhere they were looking into theme forces so i'll just cross my fingers. It's a game, games are supposed to be fun. For both sides.

It's hard to see in that photo, but there's something a little bit strange about the finish of the blue. Were you going for a sort of marbled finish?

Wet & dirty look. They have been out in the field a long time.

Wet & dirty look. They have been out in the field a long time. Ah, I see. Cool. Perhaps a bit of chipped paint etc could complement the look.

I'll give it a try, I have all of those infantry to paint and it will probably look good on them. I need to improve my flesh painting though. I hate fleshy colours. Stryker looks like he's becoming a Waith or something.

Stryker looks like he's becoming a Waith or something. How do you paint flesh? My own recipe is simple: Ryn Flesh or a darker flesh shade depending on desired ethnicity, followed by a wash of Ogryn Flesh. It can be a bit flat so I sometimes add a highlight, but often I don't bother. Darker skin is Doombull Brown washed with Devlan Mud then drybrushed with Doombull Brown again.
