If you have a bunch of models, and some friends that like gaming, I don't see the problem.
1. Take your collection and make two equal sized small forces from it. Like two battle boxes or something. 2. Ask a friend "Hey, wanna play this game?" 3. Bring models to friends house or invite them over. Give them one force and you take the other. Play game. Rinse and repeat.
You said that nobody around you is interested in playing due to the price barrier. The only price barrier is to build your own collection for those that want that. Just playing the game simply requires someone to have models and rules and measuring tapes. Once you have those, playing is free. And fun.

I feel all your pains. I have 3 armies, one Khador, one Cryx and one Cygnar. The game have dwindled, there are no local distributors and interest went incredibly down.
It pain me to no end, because I love this game and I think, rulewise, is one of the best on the market. I ended up playing malifaux (that I enjoy, but much less) due to the fact all the people shifted their interest into something more available and less expensive.
I wish 2018 will be the year PP wake up and look at the pricing policy again, and then steamroll the competition like they used to do.
From around 30 regular players in the area we went to 6...

I live in Eugene, Oregon, and as snarlyvow said, that's our situation. There are a few guys up in Washington that live in rural areas who use Vassal for the majority of their games and travel to cons and tournaments. Jaden Iwaasa, who is on the Line of Sight podcast/website, is in that boat. All of the Grymkin model pictures in Vassal, that were updated recently, are pictures of his models, so he's pretty dedicated to it. They did a whole podcast on how to use it.
I haven't gotten into Vassal yet, but I am considering starting. For now, I have 3-4 people I can get games with if I schedule them ahead of time and I'm traveling up to a few hours for as many tournaments as I can. That has been good for me for now.

I'm kind of in the same boat. The problem is I'd have to drive 1+ hours to any event and I don't feel it's worth the time/gas/entry fee for me just to play when everyone else is playing to win. I do have 1 friend who can occasionally get a game in with me but it's 2 games/month at best. So I'm stuck in a downward spiral in that I can't get any practice in so I don't want to go to events and I don't want to go to events because I don't feel like I have a chance of winning. I know that sounds childish but if I don't think that I have a chance then I just don't enjoy paying for the privilege of being beaten by strangers.
