Everyone loves Ragman. I always struggle with using him well.
I've got a game tomorrow (first in months! Yay me!) and I'm planning on bringing ragman with a big stormblade boat. Ragman has to be within 3" of a model for his death field to give it dark shroud. So there's a lot going on here. The 3 inches, the width of the attacking model's base, and the attacking model's reach. In my case, that's 3" + 30mm + 1", so Ragman would need to end the previous round a max of something like 10.5"? from where I'm planning to attack. The stormblades threaten 9", so I guess I put him right behind? But then Ragman will need a space to get through to activate first, move up, and activate death field or they won't get it. Then, I need to worry about whether Ragman blocked the stormblades' charge lane.
So what's the optimal formation? Ragman in front relying on sac pawn? Ragman behind with a path out through the stormblades?

sac pawn only works on ranged attacks so you generally want him to stay behind the line. Getting him into position can sometimes be finicky until you learn his tricks. Ragman generally works very well with huge bases which extend that distance significantly.
If at all possible, bring Gibbs. The extra 3" of range and nonlinearity of the movement make things much easier.

When I've had him used against me, something with reach is often applying the shroud. In Storm Division you might run a Firefly into position, which gives you almost 12.5" to work with and will doubly up the damage with Stormblade guns.

Does Ragman have a hard time keeping up with Lances and Advance Move Stormblades, or do the lines close fast enough for him to be effective?

Put Ragman in threat range of where you expect the enemy to move to, that usually leaves him pretty far back

The big thing is getting Ragman to apply shroud, which with Blades is not easy. It's hard to move Raggers through all those bodies prior to moving said bodies. I'd really want him either with the Lances or a Firefly. You should have a model you are comfortable proccing Dark Shroud off of and if possible that model should have 2" reach.
The other thing you need to consider is having Ragman threat a whole zone, which is really easy actually because the zones stay static. Say this with me: "I do not need to kill things not in zones." Now repeat that 87 times or until you die, whichever comes first. Let's say you're playing a scenario with Circular zones. They are 12" in diameter. And let's say an opponent barely toes that zone, so they are 12" away anything on the other side.
12" - 2" Reach - 1.5" medium base - 3" Dark Shroud Bubble = 5.5 inches.
5.5" inches is the difference of what you know a Medium Based 2" reach model can get you. And here's the thing, RAGMAN ADVANCES 6".
So here's the thing, Ragman can be .5" out of a circular zone and with a Firefly, can apply Dark Shroud to the entirety of said zone. He needs a clear path to do this but otherwise his threat range is pretty massive.
Do you ever need to Dark Shroud something not in a zone? Perhaps, I'm sure it comes up. But, IMHO, if it ain't in a zone it ain't worth killin'.

The other way I use Ragman is in a 'Catchers Mitt' type list. For example my Caine 1 SotT list forces the enemy to close with you, Ragman can sit way behind your lines nice and safe, and then just move up once they send in their pieces and you are retaliating with all your Gunfighter attacks.
