Hi All,
This weekend I competed at the I5 Team Tournament in Portland. This was a 15 team, 5-Man WTC style event. It was an amazing experience, and probably the most well run tournament I have ever been to. Huge shout out to the organizers if they are reading this.
We had a really well balanced team that we were excited about when reviewing match-ups, and for several of us this was our first WTC style tournament so we were looking forward to seeing how all the prep works out. For reference, before my lists, our other pairs were Doomy2/Gunny, Dreamer/KoN, Thyron/Helynna, and Strak1/Butcher3.

I’ve been on this Thags1 list for awhile. It is very strong in the right matchups, with a weakness to very strong shooting (Nemo3/Caine3, Vlad1) and mass RFP (Troll warbeasts, Grymkin).
Kallus1 I teched specifically for Grymkin, and could also play into a couple other bricks. I think a lot of people have forgotten how tilting Hellmouth’s can be, so there were a lot of lists that have very little screen. This is especially true with Grymkin, where a majority of their lists are all beasts and NO GUNS. This just lets me sit back and drag a few beasts into their death every turn. More on that soon.
Round 1- Thags1 vs Rahn (Spread the Net)
Round1 I get dropped into a guy playing Ossyan/Rahn, which is a matchup I wanted. With Thags behind 2 thrones, and Snapjaw on 1 side submerged and stealthed Hex Hunters on the other side, it would be very difficult for Rahn to pull the brick apart for the assassination. Especially with a nice building slightly off center.
We each run up to get into position, me behind the building with the throne screen. I strike first by Shadowbinding Disco, then get the Throne with Draconic Blessing on it and it dies. I throw a spine burst further back and kill 2 Arcanists. He then goes for the assassination run with a clever move of getting a Chimera behind everything, force hammering Thags into a throne, TKing the throne, TKing Thags, then getting some battle mage pulls for a fully loaded Manticore to charge. His problem was that Thags had Spiny Growth and 5 transfers, so I transferred the Force Hammer, one force bolt that broke armor, and the 3 Manticore hits... leaving me on full health.
I get a little greedy here. First, the Throne that killed Disco is now in melee with 0 camp Rahn, so I just take all 4 initials on him with 8’s to hit and dice +2 damage.. if I hit twice I probably win, but I miss all 4. Shoot. Thags stands up and beats the Manticore to death, but leaves him on only 1 fury. This frees up Snapjaw who charges into the Battle Mages who kills several and engages the rest. Then the Throne runs in front of Thags to screen. I had killed all the Arc nodes, so I thought I was safe, but he moves Rahn way up for the all in. This time he TKs Thags backwards, and gets Helios in the action. Helios is on a full stack but needs 7’s to pull (needs to get 2/3), and 6’s to hit at dice +1 in melee. Helios hits 1 pull, misses, has to boost the 3rd, leaving him with 2 Initial’s and 2 buy’s. Miss, Miss, Transfer, 10 damage. Not sure what the odds on that one should have been, but now Throne/Snapjaw/Thags kill Rahn. Our team finishes 4-1 and we move to round 2
Round 2 - Thags1 vs Testament on Pit2
We get dropped into a Canadian team, and spoiler they win the whole event. My opponent is playing Amon and Testament. I play Thags, and I have some good experience into Amon and no experience into ToM.. but I figure with 2 snacking thrones and snacking Snapjaw there is NO WAY he drops ToM. Wrong.
I go first and get into position, he moves up and assaults some Hex Hunters. I move forward with Typhon and spray a bunch of stuff to death, move Thrones forward and kill a bunch of stuff, and throw an oblit and kill a couple more stuff. Feeling pretty good about whittling down the recursion and preparing for a feat alpha from ToM with all the Knights Exemplar.
Stupid me not knowing the matchup, he just goes incorporeal to get an arc node near Thags and Dust to Dust’s me to death. Whoops. I had just figured he would blow his stack on Raise the Dead and didn’t even see the assassination coming. We kept playing pretending the assassination failed since the game ended so quick.. and I do think its an interesting matchup and not as much in my favor as I thought, but there might be something there. Our team loses 1-4, but we knew this team was going far so thought maybe we can still play for placement.
Round 3 - Thags1 vs Kallus2 on 2 circles/2 flags
I get dropped into the mirror with a guy playing Kallus1 PT and Kallus2 Ravens. This Ravens list was really interesting, it had 2 Angels/2 Raeks, Grotesques, Max Raptor, min Raptor, 1 Hellmouth, and some solo’s.
My game plan going into this was let him blow the raptor/grotesque alpha on killing Typhon and/or Carni, and then get the Thrones in there to wipe the Grotesques and Raptors. Unfortunately I didn’t do any of this. I get a Draconic Blessing throne onto the hellmouth and kill it.. and I am thinking it’s probably OK there since its immune to fire so he can’t get the super charge. Inexplicably, I then cycle Draconic Blessing to Typhon and excessive heal/trample him into a zone to bait the feat trade. Except now he can’t kill Typhon since he is immune to fire. So instead he just kills 2 Thrones. I beat myself up over this slip the rest of the day, but really my opponent just did an awesome job with target prioritization and really took advantage of it all. Anyways, he was also really cagey with the scenario and locked me out and ended up winning 5-0. Fortunately my team comes through and we win 3-2, with a chance to end the day 3-1 and compete for 2nd place.
Round 4 - Kallus1 vs Child on Dumbbell
Time to put my “Grymkin answer” to the test. He goes first so I get to put the Hellmouths almost the full 24” up and also behind a forest. He moves up turn 1 being really cautious of their reach. I move some tentacles up and get some drags to consume some rots/crabbits, and position everything else.
He puts an abused S&M on 1 Hellmouth and kills it, and puts an abused Cage Rager on the other and fails to kill (it is at pow 19 vs arm 22 impervious flesh.. he didn’t roll well but I also don’t know if he expected that much Arm). The hellmouth drags the S&M over next to the cage rager, then the Blight Bringer with Incite/Dark Guidance comes up and kills them both. I feat so his rattler can’t lawn mower all my Ogrun. He gets his other S&Ms up and kills some Ogrun, but I follow up by killing 1 with Warmongers and 1 with the Warspears who at prey + aura were PS17. He just eventually runs out of models once the Hellmouth drags the rattler in and the BB kills the it and the death knell in 1 go. Unfortunately our team loses 2-3, this team was also super good. We end the day 2-2 but I am still feeling happy with how well we competed.
Overall, I really like this Thags list but might shelf Kallus until CID. Even though its very effective in its intended matchup, the pair just has way too many gaps in a normal steamroller pair. Going to test some Kallus2, Abby2, and Vayl2 and see if I can fill the gaps for Thags.
Great experience though and again, if any of you can go next year you should!
