Sounds like huge based models aren't selling well through LGS so this is their solution to be able to keep making them.

Which is probably because they don't sell well in store.

My FLGS hasn't had anything but army boxes, battle boxes, individual blisters and a smattering of accessories for years. If you want anything else you special order.

There has been a lot of chatter and grumble in recent years regarding LGS, online retailers, and miniature wargaming companies. Mostly involving GW products, but also PP in the last two years if memory serves.
If the majority of gaming stores aren't carrying huge-based models, that obviously is because they aren't moving them. Isn't that simply a market force, and if so, why would PP need to address it? The stores that sell them would order them from PP. I think in this light it might be read as a move against Miniature Market other online retailers, which is a mixed bag. Affordability as an entrance threshold is important, but stores supporting the hobby are essential for growth. There's only so far you can take a garage league, and this hobby is tailored towards larger organized play.

PP sells a huge base model to a distributor, who then sells it to a LGS at around 50-55% of the MSRP.
By cutting out that process, PP makes about 3 times as much on the model than it would in a traditional sense (not just 3x profit, but 3x money brought in on that model) if they sell it full price; market forces may be the reason behind the decision, but it still sticks in my craw that they will probably charge full price on the model despite not having to pay for the infrastructure.

I agree, I don't like this move one bit. Plus that means we don't get to vote with our wallet anymore (as is the case with things like the mat5 on the storm raptor). By restricting the sale of new huge bases to direct only they can afford to limit the losses by avoid production of the model except for a very limited stock to keep in house; that should lessen the economical burden of each box that doesn't sell thus limiting our ability to "vote". It doesn't help that lately there's been quite the price growth on PP minis (justified or not is another topic) and getting some kind of discount trough sellers (be them online or LGS) helps a lot when you gotta buy a 100+ dollar model, all the while huge bases are getting more of a compelling choice (looking at BEs mostly) and they are multuplying in the game (almost every faction has 1+ BE/colossal/gargantuan).
