Playing with Pigs again in our slow grow journeyman league. Gives me an excuse to take a break from Khador. She just seems AWFUL as a battle box caster. Sure. If people WANT to come up and play with my Warhog it works but otherwise I am at a bit of a loss as to how to not get shot off the table and the lack of pathfinder is making me one sad piece of pork. Why oh why did they swap out carver.
But hey, this week we get to switch casters. SOUIEEE!!!!! So many choices. For right now and just for uber fun I am thinking Doc Arc mostly because I have never played him. Or maybe stay with Helga and since we finally can use infantry enjoy the "fun" of Dug in Defender Warded Brigards.
But am I right? No real access for him battle group to pathfinder? What have people done to make her work?

On the Farrow side, two casters can grant pathfinder to the battlegroup, Carver and Sturm and Drang. Midas, Helga, and Dr A need to make do.
I would say that without infantry it's going to be hard to succeed with her; Gang Fighter and Dash are huge parts of her kit. The single best model currently for Defender's Ward is the Meat Thresher IMO.
So yeah, she's going to be lackluster to bad as a battlebox caster. Which doesn't mean she's amazing outside of battlebox. Maybe once the Valkyries are out?

Helga's weird (though still functional!) in battlebox games but comes into her own in week 2 once she gets gang fighter working. The one successful strategy I've had for battlebox games is to Defenders' Ward yourself and facetanking the alpha with Helga. She's the most durable model in your list, so transferring & missed attacks means less damage to your battlegroup than otherwise. With some exceptions (Barny feat+wrastler) a single enemy heavy generally cannot deal with her on their own. Once your opponent whiffs on helga (setting up gang fighter), you feat for extra chaos, counterstrike with your battlegroup, and repeat.
My favorite Defender's Ward targets in order of priority: Helga>Skarath>Snapjaw>Thresher

Helga isn't *bad* per se, her feat is poor but her spell list and passives are good. She's just a warlock in exactly the wrong faction. She wants: Good combat solos and cavalry to use dash and trigger gang fighter. Budget melee beasts to force multiply with gang fighter. Very important as she doesn't have a damage buff for infantry or a delivery mechanism for beasts. An arc node or other method of applying distraction. A defensive animus to supplement her solid defences. Push effects to work alongside her feat in playing scenario. A strong target for defender's ward- this means both high def and arm and offensive abilities that can't be ignored.
She can get some of this in WWFF but not all. She can't get any of it in Thornfall.

Helga is actually a lot of fun in battlebox games. As gobber says, all you really need to do is put her in front of all your other models with Defender's Ward up and take the opponent's heaviest hitter on her. Do be careful to actually calculate how many attacks your opponent can feasibly get on you, but usually Helga camping three will be almost unkillable for most lists until you get to around 35 points plus.
But beyond that yeah, she's not an amazing Warlock.

Muzzle is super valuable in battlebox games against hordes. Markedly less so in any other situation. Helga would go crazy for a Cav unit. They'd be absurd on feat turn: Charge! Make impact attacks, which are thresher slams. Move your next cav model, making more impact-thresher-slams potentially on the same targets, etc. Then start making charge attacks, which are also slams with boosted rolls to hit. Then they can reposition to provide gang fighter and potentially be the large based backstops to get the feat damage bonus against other models

You wouldn't get slams from the impact attacks (her feat says basic melee attack) but otherwise they'd be good, yeah.

Haha that is a long line of reasoning I'll just roll with 'ok sure' until we get cavalry eh? And then, let the madness reign!

I'd love to see Helga get a few good tooltips rather than requiring a lesson in the "slammed" (not slam power attack) rules each game. -You can get the charge die, and any weapon effects like weaponmaster, finisher, etc -Slam distance isn't halved against larger bases. -You can get an extra damage die if you slam the target into an obstruction or equal/larger base.
Those latter two are the reason to bring river raiders whenever possible.
But yeah, Helga could use some help. I'm hoping they'll eventually see fit to give her point blank in line with the valkyries, and eventually some form of steady (animus on a new beast?). Mat7 and a personal damage buff like Mk2 Acid touch would also help a lot as she's got a horrible habit of failing assassination runs even on squishy casters.

I played Helga at a small champions tournament earlier this year and won both games I played her in (third game Jaga had to step in).
I think she's fun, especially with the river Raiders, I ran 6 of them and they slammed things out of zones and gave me a win, they slammed legion beasts toward my own lines so War Hogs and Road Hogs could eat them. Efaarit scouts usually ran their 18-20" to trigger Gang Fighter as much as possible.
She's fun, not great, but she does have trouble into Gun Lines I feel.
