Hi Guys,
So, I've always enjoyed playing Mordikaar, and I know he loves him some Void Spirits. Unfortunately the way that themes have panned out it looks like the only access my lantern enthusiast buddy will have is by either having despoiler make some, or winding up in the immortal theme (Not intuitively where he wants to be, in my mind anyway). This may not be much of a problem, but it will certainly change how I approach building lists with him. (He looks like he might be good in the Praetorian theme though, and I have in the past had luck in WoD despite a lack of void spirits).
Has anybody had any thoughts on what the Themepocalypse means for Mordikaar? I'd love to see them.

I played him out of theme around the start of MK3. The archidon trick seems cute and maybe will be fixed not sure. (rial them up to 3 essence blast them and you get to reeve the 3 fury to do it to the next one) Not starting with void spirits feels like a huge hit to his power and he really isn't that good to begin with. Revive is a pretty low powered spell and his host of shadows doesn't really get you away from having to take a glad unless you run all archidons, Hollow is a pretty poor spell now, and manifest void just doesn't have an effect against a bunch of the game. His feat has a bunch of answers that lists just happen to bring a bunch of the time.
Over all his void spirits seem to be the reason to take him and not starting with 2 on the field is a big hit. Unfortunately the exalted theme gives me zero incentive to try it out with him. Honestly it feels pretty under powered right now but I hope I am wrong.

I have actually wanted to touch base on this exact same thing, as I just got my Despoiler. I tried him out in an Exalted theme and I was not pleased with it, despite winning. MY list was:
Mordikaar - Exalted Theme Despoiler Archidon Aradus Soldier
Immortals full -UA Immortals Full Hakaar Ancestral Guardian Ancestral Guardian Extoller Soulward Extoller Soulward Void Spirit Void Spirit Paingivers Min
I opted for a soldier in order to have some anchor that the despoiler could hang near and do his thing with. The archidon was for assassination threat. The voids did a lot of threatening and that was it. Despoiler got shot off the table and died a pretty uneventful death before ever making a spirit. Mord did get a few souls from the paingivers, but it really didnt matter. In the end, vengeance fueled immortals were good for cleaning the board up, as feat plus the advocates +2 actually made them hard to hit so only 1 death in the unit would occur. Archidon got the assassination off because of ghostly, but my win did not feel good at all. I didnt use most spells, and mord's fury typically went towards boosting blast damage. I feel like if I run this theme again, I will not use 2 units of immortals, instead just enough to get one free solo and fill the rest up with beasts that can threat. Whenever I play mord, I want cataphracts or ferox in my lists and these theme just doesnt give us good revive targets or good essence blast fodder.

I experimented a bit (in theory, haven't got a game in yet) of using the immortals theme beast heavy with a single unit of immortals and more paingivers than I strictly need to be souls. Mind you my driver for this was less practicality and more... not wanting to buy a second unit of immortals.
Once I get a game or two in I'll let you guys know what I find!

I really can't see him in Exalted. The Skornergy is STRONG there. MoW brings all his staples but leaves his favorite toys at home. He's not in a good place overall, but MoW is as good as he gets.

Agreed. He wasn't a powerhouse to begin with, and the themes really haven't helped. ATM if I'd have to play him in theme, i'd either run exalted without constructs (beast heavy) or MoW where you can run cetratii, kitties and karax. Having kitties and krea should be enough to keep Despoiler alive for most of the game. But I don't feel like mordikaar answers any problem we have better than any other caster anyways.

I like Mordikaar outside of theme primarily for Wrong Eye and Snapjaw and the added use of character heavies. I bring the big character heavies and try and deliver them with feat and star-crossed affecting the opponents alpha turn. Essence blast is for the final assassination roll, revive keeps by beast handlers in the game, and Manifest Void tries to be the straw that breaks the camel's back by forcing the opponent to run out of steam more quickly. The list I made is basically retired in my casual meta since it swept a couple tournaments with no losses, and caused a decent amount of unhappy remarks on how tilting the list gets. No one likes missing 2 of their heavy charges which turn into no attacks against my models, who then get removed by my army on my turn. Had that happen once against my def 13 Tiberion under star-crossed. I couldn't do much except apologize for my opponents "misfortune." And since he is ADR, I'm able to tech against any counters (such as knockdown or magical assassination strategies).
Next on the retired block seems to be Zaadesh 2 in the Imperial Warhost theme for similar reasons, this time revolving around armor/synergy reasons instead of reasons that Mordikaar gets for his defense/synergy skew. Perhaps I have a pairing with these two.

TBH, I'm not sure he has a strong game anywhere in this edition. Yes, his Void Spirit game is sweet, but beyond that his card really took a hit. Revive was his stand-out tech, and since the nerf it doesn't pull it's weight anymore.
The themes don't help either. The Skornergy with Exalted is strong as mentioned, amd MoW (perhaps his best natural fit?) doesn't allow Void Spirits, unless you are creating your own. You can play him out of theme, but these days that's a strong handicap unless you're in a team format and you're teching for a specific matchup.
Without resetting Revive to it's MKII state, I'm not sure what it would take to get him where I'd like him to be. Void Spirits are awesome in this edition and SR2017, and I'd love to find a place for him somewhere.

granor, the example I was mentioning was a game against Convergence. Mordikaar had feat up and all my beasts were within 6" of Wrong Eye, so star-crossed was in effect if anyone came in to melee attack my army. Under Maddox feat, 2 heavy warjacks charged Tiberion hoping to remove him. Both missed their initial charge attacks and were pushed away out of melee range, both wasting their activation and the fury loaded into them. Basically ended the game right there, and after checking the dice, those heavies would have been removed since that was where he was focusing his attack, so my whole army survived the alpha strike turn. I tend to run the list as aggressively as my opponent will allow so I can have a strong presence turn 2 with feat up. Turn 3 tends to be where battlegroup-wide ghostwalk gets me either an assassination, or into a strong attrition/scenario presence. Mordikaar is good bait, sitting in the middle of the board at def 18 under star-crossed at least. Not to mention shield guards and transfers making him almost untouchable. Here be the list: Avoid the Void Mordikaar -Despoiler -Titan Gladiator -Tiberion -Archidon Wrong Eye & Snapjaw Void Spirit x2 Paingiver Bloodrunner Master Tormentor x2 Paingiver Beast Handlers (min) Specialists: Cyclops Raider Cyclops Brute Orin Midwinter Swamp Gobber Chef Paingiver Taskmaster Gremlin Swarm Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew Paingiver Bloodrunners
