First - let me state up front that I am not a Trollbloods player. I play Minions (which I love), but played against an army about a month ago featuring the Trollkin Highwaymen, and completely fell in love with the look of this unit.
Second - I have read Trollock's Guide to Starting Trollbloods (if you haven't, you should, it's very good as a starting point) and realize I am playing with "suboptimal" parts. But as he said, sometimes you just want to play what looks cool!
So, why am I here? Because I want to build a single list, featuring the Trollkin Highwaymen, that I can pull out when the mood strikes me! These awesome models (the character in the figures is just so COOL!) are for those casual games when you just want to roll dice and drink beer. However, at the same time, I would like the list to be at least functional, able to win games, and provide some competition to my opponent.
I picked up some Highwaymen on the cheap, and am curious what I need to improve on my thoughts.
The models I own are:
Trollkin Highwaymen x2 units
Pygmy Bushwhackers x1 unit w/ UA
Braylen Wanderheart
Jarl Skuld
I understand Jarl is not popular (and I am open to changing him as my warlock), but I think he has interesting possibilities. However, outside of a Dire Troll Bomber (because Far Strike is going to be a necessity), what 'beasts should I look at getting to finish out a 75 point list? What about solos? Different units?
My current thoughts:
- Jarl can threat 22" (24" if I want to put Quicken on him) - and with Weald Secrets he ignores concealment and cover. This makes him a viable assassination caster - two fully boosted POW 12's will put the hurt on a lot of casters.
- One unit of Highwaymen and the Bushwhackers stay close to Jarl, providing covering fire and harassing the enemy. RNG14 POW12 (Combined Fire) Bushwhackers can do a good job trimming the enemy coming across the table and the Highwaymen can move up, shoot POW 12 (again Combined Fire) twice, and then Swift Hunter back to stay safe.
- The second unit of Highwaymen + Braylen act as a flanking unit. Assuming the enemy concentrates on my large group of models, where all my power is obviously located, these guys should be able to deal with any annoyance sent to "handle" them. Then they move into back arcs and start doing serious damage.
With this in mind, and with the idea in my head of a ragtag bunch of outlaws (similar to Robin Hood, but Trollish), what do I use to finish out the army?
Current list:
Jarl Skuld [+30]
- Dire Troll Bomber [19]
- Dire Troll Bomber [19]
- Troll Bouncer [9]
Braylen Wanderheart [5]
Trollkin Highwaymen [15]
Trollkin Highwaymen [15]
Pug Bushwhackers [15]
- Pyg Bushwhacker Officer & Mortar [5]
Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew [2]
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!
