How many whelps do you usually get out on the table when running mountain king in PoD? Is two packs (10 whelps) sufficient?

In most cases that is sufficient, though using the mountain king, I have had times when I have run out (putting 2 in per hit as I purchased in points 2 groups of them + mountain king ability) and didn't have any models left despite being allowed to put more in. So normally 10 is sufficient, there are rare times when it is not.

I own 15, but that is only because I sometimes run lists with 5 brought whelps and an Mk.
The maximum I could ever see anyone needing is 20, but I'd question a list that included 10 brought whelps and an MK.

Someone did the math a while back and I believe 30 whelps can fit around the mountain king. Get 30 of them lol

I often have 10 regular whelps in a list, and some times i have that even in a MK list. I only own 10 models, and i do not think i have ever needed more than those 10 on the table, but for book keeping reasons i usually use something like burrowers for the free whelps from the MK, so i can keep my yet-not-spawned whelps on one side of the table, and the dead ones on the other side. One could use a card or something to keep track of them too, but it is (at least in principle) important to keep track of which whelps come from the MK and which come from the "units". It is even important to keep track of which whelps come from which "unit" for the purposes of army points destroyed, though no one really cares about that.
So, if you have a MK, i would get at least 10. If you will not be allowed to proxy extra whelps, i would get 15.

I own 10 and have never had them all on the table but I can be a bit stingy in spawning them from my dires.

I own 30 but that's only because I had 10 and bought a army lot with 20. I can't see much reason for more than 15 and 20 would definitely be a max unless you've got 2 MK's, brought whelps, and your opponents plan was to kill the Mk's by plinking them to death.
I run 10 pretty frequently

20, but it's because I bought another pack second hand from someone leaving the game. 10 painted. 5 modified, primed, all with a keg theme (for Bombers or Beer-y theme, now will be perfect near Hooch Hauler! 5 to be modified per character: 1 mini-Mulg already made. Rok and D&S customs will be more difficult...
Most I've had on the field at one time? ~12

Only 10.
Can see the argument in getting another pack of them though.

I've never played a mountain King, but run ten commonly without him.

I've got 20 since I've done the computations mentioned earlier. I'm using 10 of them regularly, infrequently more when I played Hoarluk 3 with a MK (fun times). I've also got a pack or two disseminated on various models that look better with a whelp on the base, and the mention of modified whelps by Joedj makes me want another pack of Mulg, Rök & Mauler-themed whelps.
