I started painting up my army box today. Finally.
I painted up the Hollow men, and spent a while muttering about all their equipment, and cursing them to be taken on and off the battlefield repeatedly...
...so while painting, I got to thinking how tha amount they're carrying is justified.
They're deserters and cowards, press-ganged into an army from which they can never really escape (They might have quite a bit in common with Cryx Thralls, if they were able to chat about it). They're on punishment duty, for the forseeable future....
They carry lanterns, although they cannot use them. They carry bedrolls, although they probably don't sleep. They carry water bottles, and probably don't drink. What's in the backpack? The things a mortal soldier would use, if they were still able to? Mementoes of home, to remind them of what they forfeited when they ran?
I mean, the Grymkin units are generally made by massive over-punishment for a mortal failing, but this seems a little harsh.
I can just see an encampment of Hollow Men, between engagements. Staring at nothing (or occasionally the Lantern) with empty eye sockets. Lying on a bedroll, but unable to sleep. Pulling out a sketch or trophy of home, that they can no longer look at, and only just remember, and knowing that they can neither forget completely, or throw it away, or get any comfort from it...
What have you realised about your army while assembling or painting up the minis?

I realised that Lord Longfellow was extremely annoying to put together. I introduced my partner to a whole new vocabulary of curses while putting him together.
But in seriousness, Skin & Moans was kind of unsettling to work with.

Hehe, you mean it's not fair to punish a mortal failing for eternity? I can think of a major world organization or two that disagree with you on that one! Yeah the army's definitely not on the good guy side that's for sure, even the relatively tame looking gibbets the cage rager carries around are really awful devices when you think about them for a minute. Does the non-human half of the piggybacks ever get to put them down? or do they just get to live as legs with a pig on top? And after you've done that for a while and realize your back is not breaking, do you just get used to it? And what did those poor horses ever do to deserve having their severed heads mounted onto hobby horses? All of this evil done in the name of some sick form of justice/retribution.. at least cryx doesn't try to profess some kind of faux moral high ground. The army concept is really creepy. Cryx is probably lawful evil, heavily regimented, these guys seem like neutral or chaotic evil, a little of both really with the help from the gremlins. All in all, a disturbing group of entities to have an army on a world also inhabited by normal humans. I'm honestly not sure which I'd try to cleanse the world of first. Whichever was closer to my homeland I guess.

They are indeed Chaotic evil in my mind as opposed to neutral. The Retribution that they sow is so much more done in the name of their own satisfaction and vengeance as opposed to justice or an attempt to better the world.

Yeah when you get into the logical ramifications of these units and models in thier fluff you realize why the defiers are all insane.
You got hallowmens logical conclusion really well, defaniteley the saddest of all the Units. They make one mistake, an act of cowardice to preserve themselves and return to thier loved ones, only to be forced into eternal servitude and most likely bring your brothers in arms, friends, and family into the same situation as yourself.
The skin and moans is terrifying...it literally just exists to flay everything it sees and wear its skin like clothes *shudders* the rattler is also straight out of everyone's worst horror chase scene. And don't get me started on the Frightmare...*gag*
As far as The piggybacks, they all are there because they lived lives breaking the backs of others so they could live luxuriously, typically those are not good people. Dread toys are lazy people who now have to work for an eternity. Both of those units have moral arguments for thier predicaments considering the world they live in (menoth laws, Marrow's laws, etc.)
The defiers are mostly really cool fluff. The heretic wants everyone to realize godhood can be achieved through your own merit and that menoth is an enslaver which is not an argument without any logical foundations. The Dreamer never wants to accept reality, I think a lot of us can watch the news, then look at our toy soldiers and relate to that, I don't like the child, a defiant rebellious...little girl? Would have preferred a teenager who manifests as "dolly" when upset. Would have been a better story. A little girl shouldn't have survived Urcaens demons... and the king of nothing is boring...wants to be left alone...cool bro now why do you want to destroy the world?...

A little girl shouldn't have survived Urcaens demons... I think they were trying to go for the full on tantrum visual, a teenager's "tantrum" is barely even a raised voice when compared to 3-6yr old's tantrum. Ask any parent. and the king of nothing is boring...wants to be left alone...cool bro now why do you want to destroy the world?... Apparently, even though he want's to be left alone - the fluff (can't remember where I read it) was that he still wants to expand his kingdom like any King, even if it means that kingdom will become a barren empty wasteland.
