There's also something to be said for the double feat stats if you hold them until later in the game. After you can get your "effective" alpha turn. Defensive feats are more successful the less models your opponent has to use against it. So If you've got some crippled jacks and only half of a infantry unit or two, it would be very hard to break that line of Legionnaires.
Still, this is coming from my perspective of anti-bandwagon Fyanna. I run her with infantry boats and the BB. So in the standard flying circus style lists Legionnaires would indeed be pretty pathetic.
Legionnaires are there to survive and hold zones. Then with Fury and the BB aura, charge what's left at pow 15 with the option of CMA. They are not a first line of the army. But that is my personal playstyle and so I cannot recommend it to everyone as I know it has it's equal share of flaws.

IMO, I'd rather see them get more defensive like ForEver_Blight was suggesting. Lose Vengeance, Stay pow10 CMA, then gain some rule like Tough and have Farilor grant Hard or something. If they're supposed to be defensive than give them back Set Defense and maybe add Blade Shield on Farilor. Tough is too reliable IMO. 1 - i think you intended to say "unreliable" 2 - I can only assume they lost set defense as there may be a unit of spear legionnaires coming out. Otherwise where the heck did Kryssa come from?

Otherwise where the heck did Kryssa come from? 1-Fixed 2-I sincerely hope they don't add another unit of Legionnaires that end up being Legion Keltarii. They used to be good in Mk2 with the combination of points cost, Set-Defense, and Mage Static, but no they triple nerfed them into the dirt when they were supposed to be buffing Legion infantry. Personally, I'd trade CMA for flank[Legionnaire] and Vengeance for Defensive Strike to put them on the same level of Swordsmen. They'll still get shot to death but at least they would have some melee presence without cramming 3+ guys per enemy, which I admit is easier with 2" melee. And for the record this is how I envision the two units: Swordsmen: higher defense, faster, innate weapon masters. Legionnaires: Holding a position and forcing melee infantry trades. But as for how they currently are, I'd consider fielding them with either Fyanna or Bethayne in Children of the Dragon. Fyanna is a pretty good turd polisher and Bethayne loves Reach infantry for her feat.

I like there design as stands. They are not quite good enough. If they were power 12 they would be a very strong unit I think though, at a good price.
Vengence is good. Mat6 is better in MK3 because most infantry lost defence.
Threat ranges on our infantry is poor. Vengence makes these guys threat 13" which is strong. Or vengence 3, run 10, threaten 2 "15 inch run to engage". It's a bit weird this is better than the swordsmen/hex hunters, but it is better.
The new minifeat makes them immune to knock down and stationary for a turn, which is great against a few casters. When it comes up it's very neat.
The only problem is their pillowfistedness and they would be fine.

Whats the rule the Silverline guys have that says they can't be charged in the front arc? give them that one instead of set defense

Give the unit Shield Guard. Call it a day.

Give the unit Shield Guard. Call it a day. Was mentioned before, great and fluffy solution.

Legionnaires should have either set defense, or defensive strike. Vengeance is okay, but not great. I like the idea of a wall of armor that smacks incoming enemies better.
