The goal for this army is to hit your opponent twice while minimizing retaliation. The Mangler gets Death Ward, the Nomad gets Iron Agression. Trenchers get blur if facing a shooty army, snipe if it's a melee-centric army. Cutthroats get snipe if the trenchers get blur I usually have them flank wide so that they can get behind or to the sides of the opponent's army. If their heavies outthreat you, use Kell, arced arcantric bolts, and the Renegade's rocket to disrupt their heavies while you get into position so that they have to waste focus shaking effects and will struggle to completely destroy your heavies. If they do not, get the alpha strike and retreat using the feat, jamming with the renegade if necessary. This is better into Warmachine than Hordes.

This list is about force-feeding your opponent a bunch of SPD 7 ARM 21-in-melee jacks. Recommend you put Bullet Dodger on Gallant until he dies, then put it on Magnus to make him conditionally DEF 16 or ARM 21. The feat can help minimize retaliation for a turn after the lines meet while the renegades can help arc calamity and tie up units. That one extra focus When the Merc jack theme drops on the 7th of Never, Sylys and Gallant probably won't be available, but for now it's one of the two best ways to run a lot of heavies. I'd assume this pairs pretty well with a drudge spam list, but I have not nor will I ever play Cephalyx so I can't speak from experience.

Both the Magni are excellent in theme, as the trenchers are the best we are going to do for infantry, and they want to take as little as possible. Both run jacks exceptionally well. I like to run Magnus2 with a Renegade and a smattering of Buccaneers and Freebooters. They end up being super resilient with Unyielding and knocked down enemies are easy to come by.

Xintas I'm curious what your list with Freebooters and Buccaneers looks like with both Magnus 1 and 2. I myself play Magnus out of theme with 2 Manglers and some lights (usually 2 Vanguard); so I'm interested on your take

Take it with a grain of salt, as I've had mixed/generally positive results, but I tend to play something along this line. Madelyn prevents me from getting shredded for a turn late game, and with all of those jacks + unyielding + escort, I'm not too concerned about getting in close. The two renegades are frequently used to knock down key pieces early on so that I can halt their advance, rather than as an assassination option. The trenchers are stupid good as a screening force and at staying alive, plus they give me Orin for free, which gives me some counterplay into spellslinger casters. Once I'm able to engage, between any leftover Renegade shots, the Buc's nets, and the Freebooter's throws, a decent portion of the opposing force is knocked down and my opponent spends a lot of focus/fury just getting back up.
Mercenary Army - 75 / 75 points [Theme] The Kingmaker's Army
(Magnus 2) Magnus the Warlord [+28] - Buccaneer [6] - Buccaneer [6] - Freebooter [9] - Freebooter [9] - Nomad [11] - Nomad [11] - Renegade [10] - Renegade [10] - Madelyn Corbeau, Ordic Courtesan [4] Orin Midwinter, Rogue Inquisitor [0(5)] Trencher Infantry (max) [16] - Trencher Infantry Officer & Sniper [5] - Trencher Infantry Rifle Grenadier (3) [6]

I like the list Xintas. I use Renegades (when I used to use them) the same way. I never liked holding onto the knockdown for fear of the fragile jack getting wrecked before using it. I've always been torn between playing Mag 2 out of theme vs in theme. Back to the topic of the OP, I've seen that both like at least 2 heavy jacks in group and then infantry to support. A bit decision is if you want to play in Kingmakers or not. Out of theme, you can't go wrong with the Gorman/Gibbs/Ragman combo. This is a great armor swing against warjacks and good utility in general. I've seen an increase in Battle Engines in my meta, and getting a blind off on the battle engine is devastating lol. I also love using Dhalia and Skarath with Mag 2. Bullet Dodger with them is great and a mini def skew module in an otherwise armor skewish list.

Oh definitely. He has fantastic options out of theme, but I have just found that the trenchers give him everything he wants. The combo seems to be an alternative, but I'm terrible at going for the assassination and tend towards area control/attrition, and this list gives me a lot of options.
