Hey trollbloods, been thinking about getting a small force going. I've heard doomy , 2 maulers, and a krielstone unit is a good place.
I like variety and I was wondering if there is a size difference between the recent dire troll mauler kit and the classic dire troll?

I have a few of each. I like the variety between them as well. I'm planning to snag an extreme Mauler soon as well. The other two are similar in size, but the extreme is somewhat significantly larger.

I can do that when I get home. I personally prefer the classic dire troll model over the dire troll kit pose. For whatever reason I think the kit makes a better looking bomber.
That extreme Mauler is a great pose though! (It's just terrible in the bag, lol)
If someone has pics of all three side by side it would be a better comparison than my two.

If I'm being honest here, you really shouldn't start with 2 maulers. Go for list variety, and make that mauler a bomber. You'll see the bomber played as often the mauler. Perhaps even an earthborn.

I'd agree, but with a slight variation. I think I would start with a classic Mauler and then a magnetized classic dire kit. That would give you options between Mauler and Bomber (and technically a blitzer but I personally almost never run it... like once this year literally).
Axer is the next beast purchase after that for sure. Runebearer pretty soon also. :-)

I've added a third mauler kit to my buy list! 19 points just seems very steep for a ranged attack. I guess i need to do some reading on troll strategy. I've also added whelps to my list (one of the biggest thematic pulls for me)
Is the starter box worth picking up? I heard mentioned that it wasn't all that hot. I can see some good benefits from the axer, rush mostly. Does that come into play when using doomy 2? His feat seems a bit better.

Most people don't expect a troll heavy to get 5 extra inches, so yes it does come into play with him.

Answering the question, "what is your max threat with your Mauler?" Is really really ridiculously fun with Doomy2 and an axer.
"Well let's see, base speed 5 + 3" charge + 1" reach + 2" rush + 3" feat for a total of 14" threat with a potential of 7 attacks with 1" overtakes."
Makes me want to add hunter's mark from Lynessa. :-D

Also, the Bomber is a LOT more than a ranged attack. It's a snipe animus for your caster, it's TWO boostable pow 16's with AOE 4, and it has decent melee capabilities as a backup in case you need it, especially with rage. Pow 18 melee ain't nothing to sneeze at, on top of two open fists.

I can see the advantages of the bomber, didn't realize the warlock could cast the animi on himself! Would anyone mind giving me some tips, im trying to build a small 35 pt list just to get me started.

Bombers is from the dire troll kit, Mauler is classic (and is missing his teeth).

I went with the Blitzer and afterwards I read everyone uses the Bomber. I got the Mauler and the EBDT as well. I also want to say I like the Axer too, I got 2 of those fellas.

Doomy2 appreciates the max stone in a 75pt list, but with only 3 beasts that need to be close to buff each other min stone is fine. 2nd: Don't pay for the runebearer. With the 3 points you save on the stone, 4 from the runebearer, and 2 extra, you have 9 points to spend on a light beast. You're at 44 points of beasts; spending just 6 more will let you take the runebearer free. I'd suggest a bouncer; Doomy is squishy and it's tanky enough to usually trade well (Storm troll is another option; there will be a plethora of choices once the CID rules drop).
