Trollbloods Army - 74 / 75 points [Theme] Storm of the North (CID)
!!! Your army contains CID entries. !!! You are using a pre-release theme.
(Skuld 1) Jarl Skuld, Devil of the Thornwood [+30] - Dire Troll Mauler [15] - Rok [19] - Troll Axer [10] Horthol, Long Rider Hero [8] Lanyssa Ryssyl, Nyss Sorceress [4] Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters (max) [19] Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes (max) [9] - Northkin Elder [0(4)] Long Riders (max) [20]
My idea: Quicken on the longriders (with the elder they are speed 10) Tac supremacy on the krielstone (gets me faster up the board when using awaken) Weald secrets on rok
Since they are all northkin models/units all upkeeps are free
My 2 heavies can threat 15 with all bells and whistles.
The nys become northkin unit and thus benefit from either +1 speed or +2 strength making them a potential pow 11 wm unit

I can replace the axer with a impaler to get access to far strike... Still debating the idea... it is 16 inch range versus 20 inch range for 2 shots at pow 10 (I think)
I have played a whole lot of Jarl in PoD this year, and i thing Far Strike is mandatory. One of his few strengths is spot removal and he needs the extra range some times.
You have a lot of threat range extension, but do you really need it? With the feat you can get the alpha strike anyway. Nyss are sort of nice, but thats 19 points that is not contributing to free models. Raiders could probably do a similar job.
I have been thinking about Jarl in SotN a bit, but havent gotten around to it yet. His main problems as a caster is that his upkeeps are so expensive that he cant run a stone effectively. PoD gets around that by allowing you to cast them for free. SotN together with the new Awaken could potentially allow him to Play in an infantry based list. He has no super synergy with the beasts in PoD, so he should be able to run good infantry as well as anyone. He delivers his army well, and he can remove key models as well as killing a couple of extra infantry models himself each turn. All the games i have played basically become a long slug fest, and if you bring things that can win in the long run, you are probably good.
Well I agree on the far strike part. But the nys are superior to raiders. 1 more speed and def, 4 inch more range in ranged attack. Combined ranged attack and weapon master. Native hunter, so I can put hunter on a beast or jarl himself.
I miss out on one free solo for max 6 points counting valka.
I think the nys offer more survivability and offensive power in this list that is.
I play Jarl all the time. I don't win, but I play him.
He wants Far Strike but doesn't necessarily need it. Bomber is better if you can fit him in; Impaler is still too expensive at 11 points and he only gets one shot off at POW 13. Having sad that, if you absolutely cannot find the extra 8 points, the Impaler does do work. Just never 11 points of work.
The one thing with Jarl to remember is that he really does nothing to boost hit/damage for his army. He doesn't have any battlegroup wide spells either, there's a lot of upkeeps to feed and he's selfish with his Fury (for Magic Bullet). Quicken and cloud feat are his signatures. Repo 3 and pathfinder/ignore cover are situationaly useful.
All of which means he plays like an anti-infantry super solo with a feat that can help you alpha ... if you play it right. I never play it right.
So anything you take with him has to be able to do it's job on it's own pretty much.
In SotN theme you'll save yourself 5 Fury turn 1, that's 5 Fury that can go into the stone. Not a terrible start.
Nyss are interesting in comparison to our friendly faction infantry options - small base weaponmasters with MAT6 and 12" range with RAT6 ... won't find anything like that in Trolls. Give them a go and report back on how it went.
I'm right the with you,Cayterpius. I think he's one of the best-looking and more flavorful warlock models, but it's just so hard to get much Work out of him. I think he has potential to be solid, but he is more unforgiving of mistakes than any other warlock I have played. After a bad string of games I decided that I needed to go play other warlocks, because I want playing up to his standards. I'd love for him to become a good warlock that can absorb at least small mistakes on my part. The storm theme might just do the job, since he can have his magic bullets and transfers, too. Definitely report back on your results, OP.
Not quite a competitive player, yet, mostly because I don't have time to go to tournaments.
Don't want to go off topic (sorry OP) but what casters have you switched to instead mazog?
I'm ready to make the jump to a different one and would love to know of any that have made for a refreshing Troll experience following on from Jarl. I'm thinking Cally or Doomy at the moment.

Would have been nice to have nyss have the northkin advantage. Still they stay way better than the raiders.
"In SotN theme you'll save yourself 5 Fury turn 1, that's 5 Fury that can go into the stone. Not a terrible start...". The theme says: "Warlocks in this army can upkeep spells on Northkin model/units without spending fury..." This means that first time you pay the price for the upkeeps, but then you do not anymore on the units I said i would put the upkeeps on. or am i missing something here ?

With Jarl i was Thinking of getting out 2 upkeeps (quicken LR and repo on stone) and put one in the stone. Fron turn 2 you will have less strain on fury since upkeeps are free on those units and the stone will hopefully fuel itself a bit

The SotN benefit is indeed that you do not have to spend the 1 fury to upkeep spell as long as they are on a northkin model. This does nothing on turn 1, but on turn 2+ it will save you 1 fury per turn per upkeep (so that is up to 3 fury per turn with Jarl which is superb)
