Greeting all.
I recently finally followed through on my plans to start a Gator army. I had my first game yesterday and figured I'd share my experience and thought process so I can be properly guided with my thinking and hopefully some new plays can benefit too.
I used a list in theme I saw on the forums by Gaston, it goes
Rask
-Wrastler
-Wrastler
Wrong Eye
-Snapjaw
3 max GMP
Mist Speaker
Totem Hunter
Gobbers
My opponent was Cygnar, a Striker 1 list with Long Gunners on one side, a heavy, a light, Stryker in the middle, then Stormblades with UA and a heavy and then on a more extreme flank, Jakes with a light, a solo that removed stealth when it aimed, and a jr I believe. We played pretty casually and we rolled the 3rd SR 2017 scenario, Spread the Net, I believe.
I deployed a unit of GMP and the two wrastlers, behind them another unit of GMP, and then Rask, Mist Walker, and Gobbers in the middle followed by a unit of GMP still towards center and then WE&SJ and the Totem Hunter on the flank with Jakes.
Deployment I struggled a bit with the one unit crammed behind the GMP with the Wrastlers, maybe it was the way I set up the table but is it important to do you best to keep the GMP up front even if it means a Wrastler or two lagging behind?
The Mist Speaker and Gobbers were great, the first turn Rask moves by a wall while in a cloud and he stays there unit the assassination run. Speaker was just there for the Veteran Leader and Eyeless Sight when needed.
WE&SJ can seriously hold their own, what a fantastic combo. I just kept an eye on when to cast Star Crossed and when to submerge, excited to play more of them.
The Totem Hunter struggled in this match up, Jakes was my prey but I got shot off pretty early on after the light on Jakes got some 3 inch move plus it's walk and boosted into it. If I properly measured out the threat I could have avoided it, but it seems that the Totem Hunter can be a little difficult to deliver occasionally. Am I missing any crazy tricks with jump?
Wrastlers seem to be in a good spot, I miss their Mk 2 rules though, Mat 6 is kinda rough.
The GMP were pretty resilient, I'm not sure how much carnage they can cause yet, it seems like they're an easy unit to advance up a could bait models and then they're just stuck swinging at him.
All in all, it was a long game as I kept checking my rules and less than 10 models died between both out feats (ARM 26 stormblades really rubbed my GMP the wrong way). During the end of round 4 I realized I could Veil of Mist the knocked down light and two stormblades engaging my wrastler, shot to paralyze Stryker, then had a Rage and Fury Wrastler eat him in one bite.
All in all, I enjoyed it, it's a simple list that has a deceptive amount of options between the GMP prayers, Admonition shenanigans, WE&SJ literally just Firetrucking off and doing their own thing. I guess my current questions lie in deployment and movement priority, Totem Hunter tricks, and any other basic advice, I'd appreciate all of it. My plan is to keep going forward with this list and then one of the local stores is starting a journyman in September which perfect lands around when this list will probably start feeling a little boring.
