Rambly rundown of masters at lock and load
TL;DR went 4-0 friday, went 0-2 sunday
As with most legion players my list pair started with Fyanna oracles list. I paired mine with a lylyth 3 oracles list that was used at adepticon. Mostly so I could assassinate someone if fyanna couldn’t, like ghost fleet was my main worry for this.
Fyanna
3xneraph
2xangel
seraph
Naga
Bloodseer
2xforsaken free
2xsorceress and hellion free
Lylyth3
3xangel
Carnivean
Naga
Seraph
2xforsaken free
2xsorceress and hellion free
Game 1
So first round I get one of my two main worries (cygnar/ghost fleet) in the form of Ghost Fleet (and also the other new theme) piloted by Brandon Andrews. Some might read this and go, wait didn’t he win it all? And you went 4-0 wtf? Yup, they apparently messed up the pairings so after we decided on skarre1 dark host vs lylyth3 we were then paired with other people in the mix up, don’t worry about it not being ghost fleet he apparently wrecked with dark host. So that was pretty lucky.
My real first round opponent also was a cryx player. I dropped lylyth3 hoping to just assassinate denny before I die. We don’t have a lot of ghost fleet around Seattle and not sure what else to do. The scenario was baseball, so there was a killbox which is good. My opponent took the side with the wall within that killbox though, bad. I went first and run forward a bit (probably could have gone further), he does similar. I then go for it because next turn I’ll start to lose beasts, means less shots, means losing, and he doesn’t have to leave that wall ever so that’s bad.
So lylyth is like ¼ inch if not less out of 16” from denny so I have to move. Meaning I need a boosted 12 to get her behind a wall after feat. First shot roll was bad, second I got excited when I saw a 6, then 1,1, last shot got her. I boosted the damage cause she had 4 focus and that’s my last shot, also I probably should have upkept battle host it would have helped me later. I then get 3 angel shots into her, one rolled poor, the rest were ok. The bolt thrower had to go next, unfortunately for me, as it crit and pushed Denny 1 inch. I measured a lot before this so I knew he had to kill her at straight dice or else I lose, but she did have a focus still and 6 ish boxes. Luckily I got it.
Thoughts, I forgot to apparate the seraph (I never do that) so it didn’t have range after the push, the slipstreamed carny also would have been out due to the push, and naga was too far. Battle host would have helped a ton so I should not have dropped that, but luckily 4 dice off 2 shots (all boosted) and a straight dice shot (boosted) worked on a 4 camp Denny. I think average (if she negates all shots, which he couldn’t) it does 22 damage so once I hit with Lylyth it was looking good. My friend said I have 25% chance at that 12 and it is 3 tries so not too terrible, but not good. Score one for eyeless sight. Not sure what else to do vs. ghost fleet, but whatever. Supposedly thagrosh isn’t terrible, but that many duders vs. small model count and denny can make my armor -5 is bad.
Game 2
So my other dodge hope is Cygnar, and unfortunately I get them, and my opponent is Cory Doyle a really good player from up north (wtc Canada, won seattle open pretty much that other guy doesn’t exist anymore, in IG finals, etc). He has haley2 and caine1. Unfortunately my friend who is better than I am at legion has played both these, had a close one with haley2, then got roflstomped by caine (I misheard and thought both were close games).
His list was (mostly) caine, hurricane, 2 units of gun mage cavalry, then solos.
So I drop fyanna and am 2nd, scenario is 2 flags. He runs up out of range of everything. I figure I need to get close else he’ll shoot me to death slowly, so I run and feat. He casts deadeye twice once on hurricane once on a cav unit cause he wants to kill that side. I start to feel real bad as he kills 2 neraphs, an angel, and a hellion on my feat turn. The most important thing for me though is one angel is alive and within range of caine, who is blocked by 2 ponies.
So with hurricane there, and a forest in my way I have to do a lot for one easy charge. Fyanna moves forward heals angel, gives it fury. Seraph slipstreams the neraph and tried to kill the gun mage cav I care about, but doesn’t. So the neraph moves (not flying) over and attractors the cav away. Cory then says his theme benefit doesn’t allow his army to be moved. I go , then he laughs and says no go ahead as we were joking a lot as we’ve talked before. This opens up the lane for a fury-ed angel to charge and need an 11 to hit caine and it is plus 9 with the armor pierce so I’m easily able to kill then, I could have bought and double boosted again if he had some focus though that is not likely to hit both.
Thoughts, Cory is a great opponent and super friendly, he knew once he didn’t kill that angel he likely was done. That caine list is scary as it out threats Fyanna’s stuff mostly and as you can tell hits it hard enough verse legion and easy-ish with deadeye and brutal shots
Round 3
Now I run up against a skorne opponent, which isn’t great as I don’t play against skorne much. So I drop Fyanna, he drops Zaadesh with a mammoth, unit of cetrati? And a solo guy to help them, a brute, a gladiator I think, then the normal stuff.
I go first and the scenario is outlast, outwit, outplay or whatever the survivor slogan is. I run up thinking I’d have to scenario this one. He comes forward cagey somewhat. I then debate sending in the fury neraph a while as it can get counter charged, and decide to so and my dice explode and he does at least half the mammoth under agonizer. He rebuttles a bit, kills that neraph, feats, and moves in more. I then go into the mammoth with another fury neraph get retaliatory struck as I didn’t read his feat all the way down : \ whoops. Luckily it doesn’t die, so the neraph and an angel kill the mammoth, which he says never happens.
After that I am not sure what happened really, we start fighting and I lose more beasts as even though I killed a lot I was getting hit back. The cetrati are moving up and I had admonition on my caster to stay safe so my angel dies. At this point the titan is sort of hurt and the brute is full so I make a plan to kill Zaadesh as my last neraph is too far away to help. The naga shoots zaadesh trying to shadow bind, misses bad. The bloodseer doesn’t do anything to the titan. The seraph then slipstream charges the titan and does not much. But that slipstream moves the forsaken forward. So it can blow up on the titan and zaadesh, leaving the titan on 4, and zaadesh a little hurt. Lastly I put fury on fyanna, cause the odds are bad, and move her to attack zaadesh, he didn’t think of the 4” reach and I couldn’t charge so 11” threat is weird. I hit once and do some damage putting zaadesh at 7, then hit again, and I needed a 12 to kill cause he has a transfer and the titan has 4 and I’m dice minus 1, thankfully I get exactly that to win. I think I had like 2 minutes left so first long game of the day.
Thoughts on this, as my opponent said he should have stayed back but really wanted to kill that angel and zaadesh helped a lot, but even I thought he was safe after that, just I figured I had no other choice. Really he was quite safe my dice just got lucky there I think. My opponent was really cool again, sorry I don’t remember his name guy from Oklahoma though if that helps narrow it down.
Game 4
Again I get skorne, this time on incursion. So I drop Fyanna and he drops rasheth, with a turtle battle engine, molit karn, tiberion, the rush titan, and other normal skorne things.
I go second so he books it up the table (stupid fast turtle). I measure 13” from turtle and karn place a pen and move my beasts. Unfortunately for me my pen placement wasn’t good, and an angel gets taken out top of 2 when he feated. At this point I am pretty sure I’m going to lose, but we made it this far so have to try. I think a bit on do I want to try and kill the siege atamantarax and decide no as it was his feat, and karn would kill whatever killed the siege so that’d be bad for me I believed.
This game was a tough one to remember everything as I feel I am missing a turn in this next paragraph.
But I start to rotate to my right, away from karn and siege, tho keep somewhat in the center and things happen and I end up scoring the right flag 1 to 0. He moves around to stay out of my threat and scores the other two flags, to go to 1-2. I move in hard on tiberion with a fury-ed neraph, a normal neraph, and a non charging angel. Its still alive of course. I kill some stuff and contest to score once again to go to 2-2 and feated. I’m also WELL up on time.
He starts to bring karn and siege closer to my stuff. His beast handlers move closer to heal tiberion and enrage him (he said 5” apparently its 3” I didn’t know that at all, tho I should have mentioned one handler moved about 10 inches to do that). I figured its no big deal, but it somewhat did later, as it would be one less heal if he wanted to enrage. He beats on my beasts and kills the angel (I forgot to dodge I believe on any misses... ugh). I still contest the middle, so he scored one and its now 2-3.
I clear my right flag again, kill tiberion mostly due to forsaken bombs (I shafted myself 4 points of damage on both because of agonizer and shield when he told me arm 23), kill agonizer, and move things to be in the way everywhere. Like a neraph on the flag, a neraph staring down rasheth, fyanna on the other side of an obstruction in case he moved, the bloodseer to contest, and the naga to be a pain. So I score 2 he gets none. I’m now up 4-3.
He clears his flag of course and puts rush on karn. He moves karn in to kill a neraph, I unfortunately missed the free strike, a shadow bind would have been choice, and karn kills two neraphs near the center flag. He moves the siege to kill almost everything contesting the middle flag with shots and contests my flag. But my naga was within 4 inches of the middle and he didn’t think it was contesting during his turn, so he doesn’t go to 5. At this point he has 4 second left and we are tied 4-4.
I spent a little time moving stuff around to contest and make sure he couldn’t just go this guy beats that guy and I win. It might have been too long and seemed dick-ish, but I didn’t want to lose at that point when I could easily have stopped it. But he said just flip it, its over.
So thoughts on this game is I’m glad I won after having such a boneheaded move early on. Didn’t let it tilt me or anything. I also am glad I was able to win a game that didn’t rely on dice like before, I mean all games do, but moreso.
So I qualified for Sunday which was awesome as I’ve never even won a tournament before let alone go 4-0 at a major con. I was just excited to be there, my normal lock and load or WMW goal is to go 2-2.
Sunday
I was worried about ghost fleet and cygnar 1 cause legion hates them, 2 cause 3 of both qualified and as people learned later the semis was 2 of each. So I talked to JVM on advice and since I wasn’t crazy about my lylyth list he said I should try this thing he made for haley2, but never got to use it. So I played fyanna and vayl2
Vayl2 oracles, 2xangel, ravagore, carnivean, seraph, throne, then 2xhellion and 2x forsaken
Game 1
They said first game we don’t play the same heat so that means no cryx or cygnar game one. Unfortunately the only person I really knew from heat B was Jeremy lee using convergence which isn’t great for me. Lo and behold that’s who I got. He played the Axis theme with 13 galvinizers and 2 donger dildo knock downers.
This game went on for a while, but we scored no control points on both sides and he killed 24 points of mine and I got 57 of his. I clocked out, just way too much stuff on the board for me, and I played slower. He thought I did well, but too slow of course. I was killing a flank when time ran out, but he still had basically another whole flank. The scenario two circles didn’t do me any help as he can spread much easier. I also think if we were closer and I obviously wasn’t going to time myself he could have done a scenario play with all those pushes.
Game 2
I decided not to drop until 2 losses cause why not. I got another legion player Bret from California. Unfortunately for me he had lylyth3 so I knew it was lylyth fyanna. He also won the roll to go first, I chose a side with rubble and a wall.
He ran up super far but out of threat. I figured I will get in rubble bunker up and feat. Which I did. Unfortunately he was able to repulse me out, so I’m only defense 18 and he could aim with lylyth. I made it quite hard with dodges and admonition to get a line of sight, but he eventually did and on his last shot possible the seraph got me. He had the same issue where his bolt thrower pushed me away so it made it harder for him (he rolled the dice and picked them up somewhat quick as I asked did it crit? He wasn’t sure and said lets say it did, I thought I saw 2 4’s so I think it did, but it helped me so I of course said ok (I even would have let him reroll to see but hit either way). I had 5 transfers, but he got me with all lylyth shots, an angel shot, the bold thrower, and 2 seraph shots. (I was hoping for one as then I couldn’t have died)
So overall it was a good weekend, much better day Friday than Sunday, but had good games and all my opponents were really nice. At the end of mark 2 I always went 3-1 in tourneys and thought I was doing well, when mark 3 hit I started always going 2-2, sometimes 3-1, so I started playing for fun more, switching up factions so I could get some variety (yay themes) and didn’t expect to do this well. Though as my friend says trust in fyanna.
