Just....
I'm not sure I have an opinion per se on this, except to say that, as noted above I've recently found myself reluctant to buy significant new additions for my WMH forces and found myself considering wh40k again for the first time in nearly 20 years, though it hasn't happened yet.
This... I swore off buying any GW stuff years back (5th?). There was a stretch that I held onto my Tyranids before giving them to a local gaming club that focused on after school activities for kids (I am not sure if getting them hooked on WH40K is any less expensive than some alternatives but at least you keep all of your teeth).
I even tried to dabble in Dark Eldar - but there was still too much to buy (at the time, either you have flying models or not).
Now, I loved the lore of 40K. The ascetic was hit or miss for me (pointy hats or generic power armor were boring but things like the Hive Tyrant or Necrons were cool). But the biggest tripping point was just I could not keep up with how much money that I had to keep pouring a large amount of money into my hobby. I'm not talking about a few models to stay competitive - but entire edition revisions where you had to buy core rules, cortexes and models.
I dipped my toe into WM/H since my son was into dragons and there was a passionate player base. I got a huge lot for half as much as what it would cost me in a similar GamesWorkshop investment. Needless to say, my son's interest slipped away but I took it up and really enjoyed it. I have played for... what, 7years now? (beginning of MK2)
But here I am... peeking over my 'wall of nope' at WH40K 8th Ed.
There are other factors here. PP has decided to get rid of Press Gangers and lean on store owners as the organizers. The store owner has declared that PP is dead to him due to their GW like practices here as of late. And he's not completely wrong - (themes, NQ subscription perks, etc.) - along with absolutely abysmal lack of communications from PP, makes it so that he no zeal for the product. Now, we as players have asked for him to do something and, being a good store owner, will do so.
But if PP has decided to indulge in less than great practices that was definitive of what GW bad habits... and GW has changed its ways to not do these bad habits... that gives me pause. Nothing speaks to a company more than what you do with your wallet.
The bottom line for me... Can I enjoy playing the game with people in the area? How much of an investment will it cost me to be able to play (and not feel ashamed*)?
*you can play paintball with a slingshot and a G-string... but you're not going to have much fun.
