Playing to counter what your opponent does, or playing to strength of your army?
I am sure the answer lies somewhere in the middle, but I got to thinking when I was playing to JotW list the other night: if the point is really to deliver B3 to the enemy caster and kill it, should I really concern myself with clearing anything out of my way other than what I need to in order to get Butcher in position? Thinking along these lines might help me if I ever am unfortunate enough to run this list into heavy infantry lists. -Z

If you are playing B3 does it matter? Go in kill all the infantry in a flashing blade or two then protect.
I would say, if you are turn 2, counter because you are second turn and they are most likely going to get the first round of attacks off either way. If you are turn 1 you can decide how you are going to place your army and your going to be playing to the strengths of your army. Later in the game you may have to adjust or risk getting swarmed or loose on Points? At some point your going to have to make a decision to push the assassination or play the points game. Butchers feat is only going to benefit Butcher and his killing power.
I guess, as you said, there is not really an answer. You just have to adjust throughout the game. Dont' want to worry about that zone? lets run a clam over there and it can sit there and be a royal PITA. stuff like that you know?

I think that has to do with the Goal of the game, or how to actually win the game.
If your assesment is that you can't win via Scenario or Attrition than it might be the right strategy to go for an Assasination and focus on clearing the way.
but normally Butcher3 also plays a good Attrition and Scenaro game so that seems more like a backup plan.

Step 1 is playing not to lose. Step 2 is seeing the win sequence of moves and doing it.

I've always had a much better handle on my own models than my opponent's models. Way back in MKI when the game was much smaller I had a pretty good handle on everything but there are way too many models now for me to keep on top of everything. So I focus on my own army more than my opponent's. A great player can do both.
