Im just throwing out ideas, and I was thinking that I thought that the Grymkyn would look allot better with a more "Far Out there" color scheme. The problem is they just kinda look too normal. They are supposed to be extradimensional beings born of a mixture of hell and nightmares, but they don't really look all that different than the creatures of regular IK. So I thought maybe a more basic, and more colorful and weird color scheme could give them a sense of unity. Like its something from a dream, and that they occupy the world, but are not a solid part of it. I think a unified color sheme could be best (Maybe Light Greens, Sky Blues, and Autumn Yellows to emphasize the "Fey" aspect). So I tried some photoshops (I'm not the best at them). I tried to make it as if their skin was the outer limit of them, and inside you wouldn't find organs or anything inside of them, just hot gas What do you think? Edit: Also By Popular Demand the Altered Flamekin from NQ 72. With Such Quality Sculpture and Painting, It almost looks photoshopped. |

Jumping off your idea: I think Grymkin's problem is a unifying color scheme. They just don't look like a unified army, which might be fine in a Skirmish, but is an issue in a Wargame. Luckily that is rather easily fixed in the hands of a semi-competent painter.

See to me, I love the grymkin, the realistic paint schemes bring to life the outlandish figures. To me, the figures themselves are what is the whole "from another dimension" feel of the army. The way they play feels very different as well. I love the models and if I were in a better spot financially (and wasn't still working on Circle and menoth) I would for sure be purchasing them.
I like the very first pic the Hound does seem like it should be more like a night troll in pain scheme. And the grymlins would look really good in a fluorescent color too.

A few issues ago, No Quarter featured a Grymkin army that had a unifying theme of eerie green flames. This had the dual effect of making them look more nightmarish and unified.

There are 2 basic reasons why you will see a unifying color scheme within Warmahordes: centralized command whose effect permeates the faction, and genetics. Grymkyn have neither. But take a look at *all* of the other Warmahordes factions and you will see that they all draw upon either real-life or very well established fantasy people, places, and things to anchor not only the the basic function of the faction, but also its look. Cygnar is an Anglophile monarchy, Khador is a Russo-Soviet-Eastern European empire, Trollkin are Highlander trolls, etc. The only unifying aspect of the Grymkyn is that they are NOT anchored in real life. They are the stuff of nightmares, the stories of the Brothers Grimm given form, and the Halloween army all rolled into one. It's not the color scheme that unifies the army, it's the sculpts that unifies the army - they are all things that should not be in this world, but actually are. In my opinion that's the real tragic thing about this release by Privateer Press - some of these miniatures look gorgeous! They don't belong on a battlefield, but the minis look really cool. How do you emotionally get yourself psyched about throwing the military might of Halloween's cautionary tales at another army? By trying to induce a unifying color scheme on the minis you run the risk of ruining the look of the miniatures. The warbeasts aren't just simply beasts, they are nightmares incarnate. A lot of the warlocks and solos aren't *just* characters, they are vignettes in their own right. |

This implies that that is a problem.
I hate having to paint uniforms. I get so bored of the same thing over and over again. Grymkin would be a great chance to paint whatever you want to look cool.

Exactly! I have no problem with the studio scheme, and I don't think Grymkin's problem is the color scheme. They are hodgypodgy to begin with, and if you're not into that kind of stuff, it's easy to dismiss. PP took a risk with their approach, but I like it. I used to paint my armies with a mixture of techniques and colors anyway, and even now when I'm trying to do my Cryx uniform I still throw in some unneeded variance. Grymkin are a perfect way to express yourself and not lose the character of the faction. |

I would not call something you personally dislike a "problem", as you did in the subject line. It's just not your preference. I hate the huge-handed Trollbloods and think they look too cartoony, like Dr. Arkadius performed experiments on Smurfs. That just means I probably won't play them. But it's certainly not a "problem."
As for Grymkin specifically, I tend to have a soft spot for the Land of Misfit Toys combined with Nightmare Before Christmas. I just don't want to assemble and paint a new faction.

The Grymkin facebook page is pretty full of hype and it's about as popular as the convergence one. I wouldn't expect a ton of people to go for them since they're limited, but they seem popular enough. |
