Pros: You can get a unit far up the table on turn 2. You can force your opponent to stay in the centre of the table You can disguise your intentions
Cons: You can end up badly separating your forces The unit will struggle to get support from your conventional deployment/Warcaster/Warlock (e.g. spells)

I've found it to be a lot better on solos than on units. Hutchuck, for example, dies quite easily to even a single boostable gun. Being able to run in from the side of a board makes delivering him a much easier prospect. If the opponent confines themselves to a 16" spread in the middle of the table to avoid him threatening anything then, well, that's basically making him worth his points on his own and I can just opt not to Ambush him in until they give me something. Most SR2016 scenarios force opponents to eventually.
Farrow Commandos, meanwhile, have a lower threat than Hutchuck (they only threaten 14" from the table side) and are more expensive, so I can't justify holding them in reserve. They usually pop up, then are forced to run to somewhere relevant, then they all die. I've heard that a min sized unit is a much better return on investment.
So from that I generally feel like if you have some self-sufficient models who aren't too expensive then they can leverage the effective immunity given by Ambush quite effectively. It's not something you want a list mainstay doing too often though.

Min unit ambush, max units are too pricey and hard to leverage all the models.

Ambush units are far better if they have ranged attacks. Being able to get back strike and being able to aim makes up for being too far away from the rest of your force to get any buffs.

Con: Sometimes spends the whole game on the side of the table. If you play with a clock I find that leaving the model in question next to the clock does wonders for my recollection. My eyes usually drift that way when my opponent taps the clock anyway so I get a helpful reminder at the start of my turn.

I wonder if killbox being more prevalent in SR2017 will cause ambush to be less desirable?

looking at the proposed SR 17 scenarios, they seem to be fairly wide spread across the table, so having a unit that can Ambush and contest, while you brick your main force up might be worthwhile

I wonder if killbox being more prevalent in SR2017 will cause ambush to be less desirable? Killbox seems way less prevalent. Its shorter and results in less advantage to your opponent if you Killbox yourself.

Are there any flags a solo could ambush and run to? That might be neato.

I love my Hutchuk. He's great. He ambushed in every single game so far.
Killing support, contesting zones, rusting some warjacks, conquering a flag, he does so many things. Easily the best points spent in my forces.
Also run min Commandos as ambushers. They work ok, their threat is just a bit too short.
