Firstly, because I'm trying to get myself to play my models painted. The McThralls I have are painted so got a free pass.
Functionally, they are meant to act as a second wave of infantry that hits behind the Satyxis, or can move to dominate another zone. The Brutes have proved to be amusingly annoying for opponents who can readily kill the normal McThralls but often find they need to use more resources to kill the Brutes. I was hoping that the Necro Surgeon would be able to refill the unit to at least slow it's attrition but a single Necro Surgeon can be overwhelmed by casualties (since the McThralls are so easily killed).
I do have a unit of Bloodwitches that I could sub in.

That makes sense, and assuming the CID changes go through the whole package will get cheaper and more effective, so we have that to look forward to.

Though Gaspy1 isn't the best caster for Ghost Fleet, I think he works really well for the Rev Crew out of theme. If you want to try something as an alternative to the Mechanithralls, you could drop them, the Necrosurgeon, and the Necrotech and take a unit of max Rev Crew + Captain Rengrave.
With Gaspy's anti-ARM support and an effective MAT of 7 or 8, they become a very multi-purpose unit. I'd be tempted to fully commit and drop the WSC for three Rifles as well, but I understand wanting them for support (one extra focus and a reroll can make a huuuge difference when assassinating with spells).
Alternatively, I'd consider trying to cram in Saxon Orrik for pathfinder on the Mcthralls--that's one of Gaspy's major weaknesses, I've found. Accuracy might be fixed when the CID comes through, at least a bit.

Asphyxious1 is actually really good out of theme with Revenants. Before Ghost Fleet came out I occasionally played an Asphyxious1 assassination list that brought two minimum Revenant units with Rifles. The rifles gave me a couple extra shots for the assassination run and the Revenants are great Breath of Corruption targets since they come back & get to activate. I preferred the list out of theme because Asphyxious1 really wanted Deathjack & The Withershadow Combine for assassination runs as well as helping to add to the cloud wall on the approach.

This is a slightly unrelated question, but how does Gaspy 1 like Carrion Thralls? They're fast, cheap, have pathfinder (effectively) and CMA, and can hit surprisingly hard with finisher. Also since they're so cheap they work as decent BoC placement targets in a pinch.

Gaspy1's problem with Carrions is just their MAT of 5. They do need to CMA every time to hit something, unlike with Skarre or Deneghra or etc. where they can become a surprise effectively weaponmaster unit against hard targets.
On the other hand, he does love a unit that ignores terrain, and they tend to dissolve on the way to melee, so they like a caster who can really swing armour and make even a handful kind of scary against warjacks/warbeasts.
