Hello, Trolls! I'm lookin' to put together a Trollblood battlebox to play into new players for demos and stuff. Alas, the standard one does not wow me. It looks like it is incapable of cracking any armor, and while I want to give the new players a good chance at winning, it feels like this would be a tad much. Maybe I'm just missing something here. But anyways, I'm looking for a 0pt army in line with most of the official battleboxes in orders of power and composition. So if you could help me out here, I'd love some suggestions. So, a 0pt. army with no character beasts, and a Warlock who would fit in with the other BB casters.
Thanks in advance!

Only having two casters with 30 warbeast points is kinda tough, but one battlegroup you could have with Ragnor is Mauler, Swamp troll, and Night troll. The Night Troll could be surprisingly effective with the strength buffs and 3 initials, while a Mauler is a Mauler. Add to this two kinds of movement tricks and knockdown, and it could do some serious work.

The problem really is that the cost of the lights are rather high. An optimal battleboox group would be something like Mauler, Axer, Impaler/Bouncer. However that is 36/34 points. If you want three models in the battlegroup you have to get lights that don't generally se much play (like the swamp troll and night troll).
My suggestion would be to go Earthborn+Mauler. That way, you can showcase how the heavies in trolls fare in their usually fewer numbers than the oponents. I think the Battle box would be ok in power level and also rather easy for a new player to handle.

An earthborn and mauler may seem like a good option, but having no range game and speed buff you will never get to smash face like you might think. Add in no good model to piece trade means you'll probably loose just as much with a mauler/earthborn as you will with the current battle box. On a side note having a ranged beast also teaches new players the rules for ranged attacks. I have yet to try the mauler, swamp, night troll version, but on paper it plays way better than our current one.

I think having a light and ranged attacks is very good for demo games as it gives a broader feel for different aspects of the game. I'd either go with the mauler, swamp, night troll package or play 4 points down with mauler & impaler

Okay, good thoughts.
How about Grimm1 with a bomber and an axer. Not much armor cracking, but with his feat the bomber might get a couple of shots in before melee fighting. A good amount of extra movement from bait the line and rush. Grimm's feat means the bomber won't have to boost to hit stuff. And with some knockdown and extra movement, the axer could be an assassination piece.
Alternatively, how about Horgle, 2 axers, and a pyre troll? The damage buffs from the feat and animi and free charges could make up for the lack of heavies.
What are your thoughts on these?

I like the idea of the Horgle one, but maybe even trade one of the Axers for a Slag, diversify the portfolio a bit, play into Warmachine a bit better.

Especially with Ragnor where you have protection with the feat for a turn and can swing +5 strength. You can easily move up agressively and start piece trading favourably without getting shot too much. However, I agree that a ranged attack would be good to include in the battle box, but I'm just not liking the Mauler swamp night troll starter group.
