So I've been playing Cygnar since the beginning of my warmachine/hordes career a year or so ago. Now, for that time, my most common opponent, as anyone that has followed his battle reports will probably know, is Kavrae. In other words, Cryx. Because of that I'd probably say I know this faction the best of any except Cygnar, having seen it on the other end of the table so many times.
Fast forward a bit to a few weeks ago. I was at a tournament where the prize on offer was a 50 point army box of your choice, two main winners chosen via raffle. I didn't have that many expectations and mainly went to play for fun (statistician). At best, I expected a lesser caster or unit prize on offer. Further, failing to achieve the bonus objectives (or really that many wins against the rampant ice-clad Khador hordes), I only had one slip of paper in the jar by the end. I had gone over to a chair during the raffle to relax a bit and just kind of listen as the names were called... but lo and behold the my little bit of paper was the one pulled.
I was aghast. I hadn't even planned for this contingency, and so at the time I wasn't even sure what box to take. I already had one box for a hordes faction for later on (to learn the other side of the game), and being a proud owner of far, far too many trenchers and defenders I really didn't need the Cygnar one. But after some thought, I made my request. Of course the in question box wasn't out yet, but I am patient.
But I soon found this avenue closed to me. The store closed, and any future boxes were off the table. Moreover that store was 2 hours from here, and I didn't realize it had shut down until it already had. But, the owner was kind enough to honor his agreement, and I was given the choice of any box he had left in stock.
I finally made arrangements today to complete the transaction, but in his final sales and store credit expenditures only two boxes remained. The first was hordes... from the faction I already had the box for. The second? The second was Cryx.
Against all odds I had found myself with a 50 point army box from the very faction I had fought for so long. So I have to wonder... did the dragonfather notice and offer an invitation?
