Hey gang, am I crazy for thinking Boomhowlers look quite good with some Minion casters? I play Farrow and Mercs, so I have them and am curious why I never see them talked about or used in any lists... Is there something bad about them that I'm missing? I know they're basically Brigands, and Posse are better if you're playing Gators, but they still seem to be a quite viable option.
On that note, how are the other newly opened options faring for us, such as the Nyss Hunters, Brun&Lug/Dalhia&Skarath, or being able to mix and match all types of minions now? I haven't played much of them in mk3 and am excited for the new possible combinations!

"Basically brigands" is optimistic. -2 range on their guns, no hog wild order, and no prey make for a huge gulf in their ranged capabilities, to the point where Boomies largely ignore theirs. Their guns can definitely be useful against knocked down targets (Helga/Barny), but generally suffer from not having the range/rat necessary to deal with infantry, or the pow to chew through heavies like brigs will.
Antimagic, Reveille, and blocking tramples are the main draws of boomhowlers (all of which works pretty much as well with just the min unit). Getting good use of the antimagic requires an effect that can keep Boomie alive and is heavily matchup-dependent, but can be quite rewarding when it happens to work. I'm not sure if it was worth the points or not without further testing, but I've brought the min unit a couple times just for Reveille (since everything's tough in pigs and wants to charge). They're totally fine, but face stiff competition for those points. Mercs tend to do better with them because of Ambush in theme, and Magnus2/Macbain feats to keep boomie alive while denying spells.
Nyss have a place with Helga (there is also an argument for Brun and Lug here for no-knockdown tech). Dahlia+Snek are fantastic, particularly with Jaga, Arkadius, and Rask. All of them have an issue right now in that they force the caster out of theme, increasing their opportunity cost. Does Arkadius want to get crit knockdown retaliatory strikes on his heavies, or bring the snake for pathfinder? Does Helga want to run Nyss, Wrongeye, Feralgeists and River Raiders, or to get 15-17 pts of free points in theme? It can definitely be worth staying out of theme, but themes seem intended to be the default. Until we get more themes Boomies/Nyss/Brun/etc feel a little on the expensive side for what they bring.
