Do we have an explanation for why Mortenebra is able to work for infernals in Heart of Darkness but also against them in Strange Bedfellows?
Is there a piece of her story I'm missing?

Heart of Darkness is considered an "alternate history" theme, essentially. A collection of characters who each had a reason to sign up with the Infernals, but may or may not have depending on how events during the invasion played out.
Gastone Crosse is a similar case, belonging to both Hearts of Darkness and Flame in the Darkness.

She's in strange bedfellows because she was originally with the convergence and then joined cryx after they ousted her for doing necromancy stuff (even though convergence soul vessel tech is essentially just that but dont say that in front of a cyrissist).
She then told Denny to bring Gaspy's phylactery to Aurora, who make gaspy4's body.
So, basically she sin bedfellows because she's inclined to "faction hopping".

Sorry, but her being in Strange Bedfellows doesn't make any sense. She hasn't even shown up in the lore of the invasion; she literally did nothing besides telling Deneghra to go look for Lucant, which was likely to get her killed. Deneghra just happened to stumble upon Aurora's faction first, which saw the prudence in recruiting a powerful ally. Unless more fluff is released to prove me wrong, the only reason that makes sense for Mortenebra to be in the theme is because she has a vague connection to it, being originally of the cult of Cyriss, and Deneghra would be too much of a liability, from a game design standpoint, to have available in 2 whole new factions. But yeah, she's in Hearts of Darkness basically because, if she hadn't been taken in by Cryx, she might've turned to some even darker masters for power in the past. That whole theme force is one big what-if.

I agree that it makes limited sense given how the Hengescrolls shaped up, but you gotta take that up with the lore writers not be.
