Hi all,
I´m a Hordes player in and out. But I want to bring WarmaHordes back on the tables in my area and therefore I though about painting a starter army so that I´m able to show the game from the Warmachine side of things.
Well, I chose Menoth for this project because they offer the best lookin models in all of warmachine and with the Exemplars there is a strong distinctive theme.
Therefore I like to get some advice on what I should use as a starter army.
The path I like to follow (if possible):
Or should I just start with the Meonoth Battlegroup boxed set? Though I don´t think that this will scale well to higher point levels.
Thanks in advance

If this is a teaching army, then part of the question is how far up do you want to scale, and are approximately how competitive do you want it? I'm asking this cause the Battlegroup box set is fine...to a degree.
But what they hey, lets go with both (Sevvy and battlegroup box set). My off-the-cuff, 25 pt lists I'd suggest:
Malekus - Faithful Masses Castigator Repenter Revenger min Choir Vassal Mechanik Menite Archon Zealots + UA
pros: fun synergy between Malekus, Repenter, Archon & Zealots. Decent intro to menoth denial (both with Choir and Zealots) and recursion (Zealots). Plus you get to start with the battlegroup box, which is nice. Theme helps Castigator with low-POW. Decent intro to Menoth "I will avenge that model" (Theme benefit & Archon)
cons: Malekus has some tricky order-of-operation issues with scourge, open fire, and feat. Tends to not be competitive as you get more points. Easily countered by fire-immunity.
Sevvy1 - Exemplar Interdiction Hierophant Blessing of Vengeance Crusader Redeemer Exemplar Warder min Choir min Exemplar Errants Vassal Mechanik Wrack
advantages: Far more competitive caster. Intro to denial (self-sac, warder-that-technically doesn't die when it dies, Sevvy1).
cons: low body count (Exemplars are expensive, pt-wise). Easier to expand to a more competitive list.
Personally, I prefer Malekus. But that's cause I'm biased and love setting things on fire, even though it tends to not work too well in warjack-heavy games.

Malekus comes in the starter, but boy is he a flaming turd of a caster. I recommend steering away from that starter entirely. And your new players too.
Sevy1 is the opposite. He’s a great turd polisher. Hard to go wrong with him in most standard lists.

Thanks for your answers! If this is a teaching army, then part of the question is how far up do you want to scale, and are approximately how competitive do you want it? I'm asking this cause the Battlegroup box set is fine...to a degree. To be honest, I don´t care much about competetiveness. I own a large collection of Minions and I´m quite able to scale down so that games might be enjoyable. On the other hand I like to get models which offer synergies just to show what the game is about. IMO that´s a no go and the reason to avoid him. I like that list. What about this traditional one? conflictchamber.com/?c2200p_-1r0y221G1Hme3t2_2jfVProtectorate [Theme] Exemplar Interdiction [Kreoss 1] High Exemplar Kreoss [+29] - Reckoner [16] - Redeemer [11] - Revenger [10] - Hierophant [3] Vassal Mechanik [1] Choir of Menoth (min) [4] Knights Exemplar [9] - Knights Exemplar Officer [0(4)] Mmhh, thinking about it, High Reclaimer could also be a good caster to show Menoth´s specific warfare. It´s just too much choice here.

Please, don't. Kreoss1 pop and drop isn't a fun experience on the receiving end, doesn't really teach much and is discouraging for new players. Aim for solid punch for punch attrition games as they will provide both learning players with memorable moments.

I second avoiding Kreoss1, for pretty much all the reasons stated above.
Basically, Menoth has (imo) 3 mechanical mini-themes. Denial, punishment, and fire. For a starter list, you want to have at least 2 of these to be able to give an idea of what the faction is like. You also want to be VERY careful with the denial, as you want it there (it's a big part of Menoth, after all), but can also be a very negative experience to play against when just starting out. At 20 pts, with just starting out, I'd having the Choir be the biggest piece of denial.
Casters I'd personally suggest for a starter list, without regards to future building or competitiveness. This is, as always, off-the-cuff and may have some problems. -Durst -Feora1 -Kreoss2 -Sevvy1 -Kreoss3 -Malekus (the order-of-operation issue isn't bad, you just tend to not cast Scourge) -Thyra -Vindictus
Basically, I'm looking at who has middling amounts of denial (so no Harby, for example), and a fairly simple feat that the power of which can be easily understood. High Reclaimer is a possibility, but I'm hesitant both because he's so dependent on souls and because, frankly, I've never played with him.
Of the above, and assuming you want to stay away from Malekus (sad fire-boy), I'd most suggest Sevvy1, Kreoss3, or Thyra. They're all turd-polishers to one degree or another, and while Kreoss3 says he wants Vengers and Thyra says she wants Daughters, they can really make anything work. So use the rest of the list to showcase whatever aspect of Menoth you'd like.
