Hi every one! Im back on trolls after a year and a half of Circle (yes, I actually switched BEFORE DH was a thing ). Ill try and write some battle reports, cause I do not get to play as much as I like, and writing bat-reps allows me to analyze my few games a bit and get more out of them. Without further ado, here is my first report. Grissel 2 (KC) vs Lylyth 3 (Ravens)
Terrain and deployment He wins the roll and chooses to go first. The scenario is Invasion. I give him the side with a wall and a building as that will restrict his two huge bases somewhat. He deploys (west to east) Craelix, Tinker, Harrier, Bolt Thrower. Lylyth and the Arch in the middle with Valkyries to the east. I deploy WW to the west, Bouncer and a tank a bit to the east, and the rest in the middle. He places a Hellmouth in each zone (sooo f-ing annoying) and keeps the striders in the middle cause he is afraid of the WW blasts. He forgets to deploy his Helion and we do not notice until after the game. I place scouts to the west, and the burrow marker is by his west Hellmouth. Im hoping to win that side some how, while contesting the east (also some how).
Legion T1He claims board space while staying out of Bomber threat range. Grissel threats 21 though and he is in that range… camping 0 as he put up wind wall.
Trolls T1He has two shield guards but no camp. He is within 18” of Grissel, so I go all out. I boost 3 shots at him. I hit the first two and he shield guards both (one toughs, which we forgot that he cant due to knock down). Third shot miss, but it was worth a try imo. I cast Earths Blessing and camp 2. L&T place Grissel a bit further back, and I run a wall of large bases in front of Grissel. WW places 11” from the hellmouth (forgetting that he threatens 10.5, not 11.5…). Scouts pull back to hide from Craelix. On the east, the Bouncer moves up aggressively and hopes to run and engage raptors next turn. The tank stays back.

Legion T2This turn he does some good things, some bad things, has a bit of luck, and a bit of bad luck. He decides to feat (not a good move in retrospect) and stationaries 2 large bases in my wall of things. He then shoots his last shot at a whelp to blood boon, and does not boost to hit… double 1s… He repos back as far as possible to not die, though he is camping a lot. The Bolt thrower also crits knocks down a bomber. The Arc angel walks up to the bouncer, needing 6 to hit (but I spawn a welp so he needs 7s) but he hits all attacks and finishes it off (pretty lucky). The striders skirmish around his forest and stationaries L&T. Craelix walks up but stays outside 15” of the scouts. Raptors walk up and shoot at my tank and some whelps and boomhowler (hes behind my forest) but roll bad and/or bounce off the armor.
Trolls T2Revenge time? His feat is gone which is lucky since my bouncer is gone too. I have to shake 3 times on the 2 bombers, and two of my tanks cant activate at all though. I also botched the placement of my WW so I cant charge the Maw. I decide to unburrow anyway to shoot the maw, but do a total of 0 damage (I need 7s to hit it turns out). WW goes in and kills some tentacles and some striders. Scouts decide that they have to take it on the chin and run up so Craelix and the striders can shoot at them. Grissel feats and shoots the Arch Angel for some damage. I camp 2. The Bombers put some damage in to the AA too, but since they had to shake and snipe, its not very impressive. Boomie shoots at a Raptor knocking it down but not killing it. The tank on the east charges and bulldozes a bit. I forget that there is a knocked down raptor and shoot another one and miss. It does contest though after repo. Legion T3[forgot to take pic]
He feels like he cant chew through my ARM and decides to go for assassination. He can actually charge Grissel with the AA if he can clear a whelp. In the end he gets a Harrier to run and get mark the target on me. Lylyth can shoot me 3 times and I have to transfer once and still take like 10 damage. The bolt thrower shot me as well but thankfully didn’t crit. He can shoot me with a Raptor or two, but no damage. AA goes in with a charge, but in the end, DEF 15 ARM 21 and one transfer is enough. He leaves me on one box (a free charge from the missing Hellion would have been great there…). On my turn I murder Lylyth easily enough.
Post game thoughtsHis turn 2 was definitely not optimally played. In retrospect I think he should have killed my bouncer and saved the feat to always threaten assassination. He should have tried to win by scoring the east zone while contesting the rest. The F-ing hellmouths are so hard to kill that it definitely could have worked. The match up was very fragile as we both have dangerous assassinations, and most of my tricks do not work here (knockdown immunity in too many places). I didn’t play very well either. I should have realized that the bouncer is way more key than I though. It should have been back protecting Grissel, and two or three tanks could have gone for the east zone instead. I should have tried to use a Bomber and the WW to get rid of the west Maw and tried to win from there. We both should have played carefully for the long game, and instead we went way to aggressive resulting in this embarrassing chaos. It really shows that me and Oskar are both way out of practice. Still though, we both had fun playing! I didn’t find any super glaring issues with my list (except that it isn’t great against high DEF things that cant be knocked down, but we knew that). I am currently in full Troll mode and KC is the theme ill be exploring in the near future. The latest changes had made it in to a very playable theme, even if perhaps it doesn’t do what you need to do in the meta. In a vacuum it is solid I think, and that is all one can ask for. The meta shifts constantly, and when the time is right, KC will be good I think!

Have to wonder, if you don't use the bouncer's animus, wouldn't it be better to replace him with a unit of Valkyries? They're less durable, but they hit harder, further, and add to your volume of shots.

I just threw him away too early this time lol. 3 shield guards are very nice though. Maybe if i desperately needed to find one point...

Just imagine how sad the AA would have been if i had the stone aura and feat up whennhe tried to kill the bouncer. No way he kills it then 😎

This is a really good battle report. Very interesting to see what happened. I'm looking forward to more trolls stuff.
Slightly off topic, but do you have any advice for someone who wants to try writing their own battle reports?

Welcome back to blue side! We have new toys.
High-def-KD-immuni has always been problem to our shooting and while tanks give nice buff to is by mark target, it's still not super. Earth's blessing is indeed key against Lylyth3, as it just enables the assassination. For bouncer-valkyries question, it really depends on your list pair as one list should have earth's blessing (it wont help against Kreoss1, but take still away quite many assassination lists). On the side note: just played last week against similar Lylyth3 list with Borka2 (double EDBT) and that game was quite brutal as Lylyth just didn't have tools to break my front line.

Slightly off topic, but do you have any advice for someone who wants to try writing their own battle reports? Oh... I guess i think some simple pictures help me a lot to remember what happened. I thonk you shouldnt be too detailed either, and try and focus on the broad strokes of the game. I do not read many battle reports myself. I basically write these to help ME analyse MY OWN games. You guys just get to tag along lol. For me, this really helps getting the most out or the games i do play. I guess that if you try to formulate your thoughts on why the game went the way it did, and what you could have done to change that it makes for more interesting reading? On a diferent note, ill be posting these reports over at Line of Sight in the future. Ill still link them here though. Jaden bribed me with his millions of dollars of paetron money. 🤣 Ill still bump this thread and check it out for comments though 😅

Man Zaateroth has been my bane for months. I have tried a half dozen different lists into her and each one boils down to me missing critical attacks(like mat 10 missing def 14) on the feat turn and it straight up ruining my life. I even tech for high mat and still can't get the job done. Sooo very frustrating. Two games in a row, my opponent left Zaateroth sitting within threat range of my caster(Kolgrima and Borka2 respectively) and I failed miserably to kill her.
