Hello, everyone! I played a bit of Warmachine back in Mark 1. I've recently decided to get back into the game. I've found a few players at a local game shop who have agreed to play some battle box games with me until I'm comfortable with the rules. I currently have Magnus1, a mangler, a rover, 2 renegades, and a talon. I can only cast Iron Agression on one model after all although I was usually going to give it to the rover. Edit: Also, what would a good third caster be to pick up? I want to get Magnus2 for sure, but I thought it might be a good idea to pick up a caster with a different playstyle too. |

Hi! I'd say because mags1 likes his battlegroup, you might want to look into steelhead arcanists and the soldier of fortune or kingmaker for models that compliment him. Outside of iron aggression, mags1 doesnt do anything for jack marshals. But if you stay in Irregulars theme, kayazy eliminators, ayanna and holt, and sylys would be good purchases in general that are frequently used in that theme and would help. Lanyssa helps with hunters mark, especially nice if elish is present for puppet master re-rolls. Since mags1 has no armor cracking, ragman, hermit, and ayanna and holt should be somewhere. Idrians for a unit to shoot, and proc flank, go well with mags1 as well.
For a second caster, fiona is pretty good, and she runs infantry/solos well. She feels right at home in irregulars. Damiano is still good as well. Both those casters run alot of stuff good, so you dont have to spec your purchases to niche stuff.
Irregulars has so, so many combos that pick what you like and if your metas relaxed you will have a good time. Hope that helps!

Thank you, that was very helpful. I thought the Devil Dogs being able to knock Magnus down might be fun, but the pieces you mentioned do look useful. Back to the drawing board!

Devil dogs have always been a bit off, they have good abilities but you pay for all of them and they rarely get to do all of them in a game. However, a bucaneer might be up your alley- the net knocks down with no damage. Also, when boss machorne (sam is a solo now) comes out, she will be very, very, good in irregulars and mags1 iron agression would pair nice with her. Proxy her if able and see if you like it! That list is looking pretty good. I doubt I'd be able to talk you out of it, but at a low points value I have found it hard to justify taking two Renegades (I say this as one who owns four despite the FA). Ten points can get you pretty far, and grabbing a different jack, such as the versatile Vanguard, or a Talon with a cheap solo are worth looking at. The Talon is a robust, cheap warjack that, at 7 points, is sufficiently not scary such that it usually flies under the radar and gets serious work done.
While the advice you get will generally tend toward what people think are optimal choices, the important thing to remember is that no two players or metas are the same. You don't have to be a hardcore SR kinda guy. I was going to advise looking away from Moorclaw, but honestly, he's a pretty decent jack marshall, the Rover is a great choice to go with him, and the model's pretty fun to paint.

Personally I do reccomed marshalling a Freebooter under either Dirty Meg or Boss MacHorny with Mags1, as a follow up for Scourge or Obliterator Rockets.

I appreciate the feedback and this list is by no means set in stone. I imagine that if I decide to keep playing that I'll continue to collect so that I may refine my selections in response to my local meta. Edit: The freebooter looks ... Very interesting. A third attempt just for fun. It's only 49 points, but looks neat. Yeah I'd run that list, looks good. Moving it up to 75 I'd put in a few more shooty solos like Kell and Harlowe (one gets to be a req point when moved up) and maybe a nomad. Toss in whatever else you like from there. Eilish is good anti magic tech. Croes cutthroats are good with mags and can be hard to pin down. Put in a few games and see what you want more of

Id recommend some nomads and/or toros on mags if you move up in points, they are the perfect death ward targets. Units other than kayazy girls, aiyana and idrians are iffy because all he has for them is blur if snipe is on something else. Honestly just put blur on himself, where its free.
