I keep hearing about mixing x faction with y faction. Yes, the new CID has drafts for a Protectorate/Khador cavalry theme, a Cygnar/Mercenary Morrowan/Thamarite theme and a "corrupted" Infernal theme.

You cant pick and choose as much as in 40k soup. But you can have stuff like - khador warcaster with cygnar arc node attached - cygnar warcasters with khador jacks - menoth and khador cavalry together. Supposed to be fun. Im more in the heresy camp.

So 40k style “soup lists” are coming? I don't know what that means, so I can't answer that. Ex: Chaos space marines 10k sons strongest casting World eaters strongest melee. Ironwarriors general chaos 2sub armies, one list. Best of both Ironwarriors suck competitively because they cannot takw melee or sorcery up to 11. Most tournament lists include one or the other... PP already did this to minions: Gators armor crack Pigs utility You have to buy both now as they collapsed the factionon it’s self limiting the “design space” for each sub faction. Which is why most merc players take either dorfs(low armor crack high utility) or ceph(dude spam) for the longest time.. Trying to grab collectors so transparently bothered me with the resistance theme. But it i was like, meh, I don’t play a “real” faction so i shouls shut up and this community doom posts enough...

I'm actually quite interested in how all this will turn out. I love the fluff aspect of this that the old faiths are coming together to fight evil and the evil players are corrupting factions to their own ends. As with all things like this, the acid test will be the execution and balance of the thing, not the idea itself.

It'll be interesting. I am fearful about a warmachine "endtimes," possible faction nerfs because "you can take xyz from other factions" and models being invalidated, I am painting my backlog with furious speed and trying to include new releases right now. truthfully, I just want magnus 3/0

No, these themes are far from being soup lists. The available casters are severely limited and none of the themes are open season on multiple factions worth of models. The most generous is HoD which allows all the Infernal stuff plus 2 units and 3 solos from one of 5 factions (all have to be from the same one).

Flame in the darkness looks like is secretly 2 different themes, morrow or thamar. If there's anything that's great, it's representing what's already been well established. though it feels like they could be represented in different themes, despite being twins and all.

They did so in the past, even back in mk2, Sloane had a theme with Widowmakers in it, Magnus2 had a theme with Cygnar crap in it.
It's a pretty decent way to expand on options without adding to the model/SKU bloat, limited as they are I expect lots of cute/cool stuff but nothing really gamebreaking.

If you're playing Crosse in Flames in the Darkness you can say you're playing Crosse faction.
