I tried one last change. This time I left the gun unpainted and did the headlamps in simple dark/light yellow with no attempt at a glow:
I think I like this latest version the most. I think I'm going to paint the detail on the upper left of the turret the same way - it makes sense to have a spotlamp on the turret right?
Looks good! Maybe the blue glow version is the commander?

Thanks. Yeah, I can't be bothered to try to paint over the blue, so he's pretty much going to have to be the commander.

I love the yellow headlights but I also really like the blue glow in the gun. Is there a reason not to do both?

I love the yellow headlights but I also really like the blue glow in the gun. Is there a reason not to do both? I dunno, the blue glow on the gun is just not really working for me. It might be because, for some reason, I have the idea in my head to paint the GUARD units in "realistic" schemes. I know that the setting isn't exactly realistic, what with giant robots and stuff, but... traditionally in the kind of movies and anime that I've seen about this kind of giant robot/monster battle, the most things are pretty normal/modern day (buildings, tanks, planes), and it's only the giant robots and monsters that stand out as really being out of place, and I guess that's the kind of thing I'm going for right now. Well, to some extent anyway; purely realistic might be a bit boring, and might not fit some of the units, so I guess I'm going for a balance.

So, out of curiosity: how did you the shading on the tanks? Guessing Nuln Oil?

So, out of curiosity: how did you the shading on the tanks? Guessing Nuln Oil? It was Army Painter Soft Tone wash. I bought the whole Army Painter set; I think it's a dozen washes, but most of them are just shades of brown. Soft Tone is the lightest brown I think, slightly reddish, probably somewhere close to Ogryn Flesh (or whatever it's called these days). Personally prefer GW washes; Army Painter is for people who need six different brown washes, and their coloured washes are less colourful than GW's.

So I started the varnishing process on the tanks, and lo and behold if it wasn't my old friend SUGAR COATED FROSTING OF DOOM! I think I'm done with aerosol varnishes, just waiting on some vallejo varnish for my airbrush.

It happens to me infrequently. I thought I had taken all the right precautions, but... eh. It was just one tank, the blue one, if olive oil doesn't take the frosting off then I can strip it and repaint it to match the other three properly.

I've heard that a hair dryer can do the job, too.

I've heard that a hair dryer can do the job, too. Interesting, how would that work? Just point a hair dryer at it for a while, or is there anything else you need to do?

I haven’t tried it, but the theory I was given is that the problem is excess humidity causes the fog, so application of hot dry air will pull it out.

I know y'all 'ave probably forgotten all about this thread by now, but the good news is I finally finished painting the tanks:
I had to strip and repaint the clouded one in the end, then I needed to figure out an alternative varnishing solution. Then I had to paint and varnish the rocket pods. But yeah, all done now. The air support is primed and ready to paint, but I'm not sure if I'm going to jump straight into them or try to finish Defender X first.

Trying to figure out how to paint the flames. This was a test (click for the full sized image): It's not looking too bad, but I'm thinking I might need to try to make it look a bit brighter. Feedback?

I like the flames! I think they turned out really well and the paint shows off how good of a job you did on the custom hand.
Do you have any ideas of what colour you want to paint defender X? That’s what would drive whether or not the flames should be a little brighter in my opinion.
