It would have been nice if MkIII was released in a better state - perhaps that would have avoided some of the lost player base, perhaps not - but I think it's much easier to say that in hindsight than it would have been for PP to realise that at the time. Plus we can't really be sure that taking longer would have made things better; perhaps the game was as polished as they could get it with in-house testing, and they really did need a much wider player base to play it for the issues to show up? This. Who's to say they would've ever figured out that the Gang/Knocked Down interaction was broken? Or that charging your own stuff is just not something that they wanted in the game anymore? You can only stare at your own creation for so long (it's really not that long) before it needs to pass to something like peer review. Most people are inherently blind to their own mistakes and most things in general can benefit greatly for having a different viewpoint and/or critical eye applied to it. Maybe they could've done better, but maybe they couldn't have and then it's a good idea to just release it "as-is" and see what kind of skeletons fall out of the closest. It probably would've been wise to call it a "public beta" instead of a finished product though, as that is the part that made/makes many people salty.

When I'm painting a model, I sometimes get to a point where I can't see it anymore; it's like I'm staring right at it but my mind completely ignores it, it's just so bored of looking at it. You really do need fresh sets of eyes sometimes.
