Near as I can tell it is for things like WGI who might have IF on them to help clear out a jamm.....but otherwise...and would think in nearly every instance the other two star actions are SIGNIFICANTLY better.
Has anyone used that star action on the Kaptain? I feel like I must be missing SOMETHING that works/seems cool.
(yeah - I want Seige Tactics on him....or desperate pace)

I get to use it on the Field Gun occasionally, but I routinely take two Kapitans and and all four crews.

Now I am REALLY confused ;-) Sorry, not for shooting at friendly models, for shooting at enemy heavies while they're in melee and not have to worry about knocking my own stuff down if the shot misses. It doesn't come up often, but I'm not sure I've ever used Close Fire on the Mortar Crew.

Yeah the only application I can see of it is if you try to shoot something in melee, it's not something I have ever used and it's clearly not the reason why you'd take the artillery kapitan.

Why does it exist?
Presumably because something changed during the MK III rules and Close Fire used to work on the Mortar Crew.
Otherwise, it is the very corner case of "I fire into melee with the Field Gun Crew and don't want to knock down a friendly accidentally."

I figured it was supposed to make the AoE not damage friendly models...
Has this actually been ruled on?
Because models under a template are "hit" and effects that cause an attack to automatically miss take precedence over effects that make it automatically hit. So the automatic 'hit' from the template should be negated by the automatic miss from the Kap...

If I get the gumption, and somebody doesn't beat me to it, I'll provide the rules quotes.

Yeah, I mean I figured from this topic that was the case... It just seems pretty obvious that the intention behind the design of the model was different to how it actually works...
And it didn't work in Mk2 either. The only case where it really does anything is on Spray attacks and we don't have a weapon crew with a spray and never have...
(I mean, the answer to the question is that this rule exists for Spray attacks. The reason it's on the Kap is because PP often really derp when designing models. I bet that IF they actually played any test games with it, they played it as making the AoE not damage friendly models.)

Close Fire works just fine on spray attacks and non-AOE attacks, and did in MK II as well. (As I recall, only the Scattergunner UA had it in MK II, but anyway.) It just so happens that AOE attacks are called out in a specific way in the timing chart that causes Close Fire to do nothing in that situation.

I meant it didn't work on anything in Khador in Mk2.
It was great on the Scatter Gunners.

So if you're trying to knock down something in melee with your own jack. You don't miss and then knock down your own jack.
Easy peasy.
