How does assault interact with the in melee defense bonus?
Say I have 6 shocktroopers assaulting a large base jack.
My understanding of the rules:
1) Shocktrooper 1 moves his 7", ends within 1". Takes his ranged attack right now. Since HE is the only guy engaged to the jack, no one gets an in-melee bonus 2) Shocktroopers 2-6 each move, takes an assault shot after the move. All 5 give the jack the in melee ranged bonus because of #1 already engaged 3) Now I go through all 6 and do the normal melee charge attacks
Is this right, or am I missing something that changed part 2 above?

the rule (prime pg 51) states: therefore, as long as an assaulting model gets into melee reach of the target, it ignores all instances of the melee bonus, because the whole rule is ignored, not just the rule as it pertains to a singular model. your 2nd-6th models, assuming they can all get to within 1" of the target, will ignore the in-melee DEF bonus entirely, regardless of how many other models would generate the bonus. however, any models that don't get into their melee range would have to contend with the target-in-melee DEF bonus because they are not making it into melee themselves, and therefore don't get to ignore the rule. additionally, do note that even for the models that make it into melee, you do still randomize missed targets (that's a link to pagani on reddit if the forum style doesn't highlight it for you) just like you would if you were dealing with the target-in-melee DEF bonus.

Okay so all 6 - no in melee bonus to defense.
But for assaults 2-5, you randomize misses and possibly shoot each other?

This is why the push to external sites like reddit and facebook is such a poor idea.
Assault shots don't randomise if they were made from melee. This is in the current errata document, which is newer than the linked Pagani comment, which was vague anyway.
mrtuna, not sure if you understood - individual models that make it to melee with their charge target ignore the def bonus for melee, but those that shoot from further away still respect it. Models in melee with their charge target do not randomize misses, but those that shoot from further away still do.
[Edited for precision]

Just another precision: you make the Assault attacks after all the models in the units have finished their charge movement.

Just another precision: you make the Assault attacks after all the models in the units have finished their charge movement. Source? Assault says: > A model with the Assault advantage can make one ranged attack as part of a charge during its activation. This ranged attack must occur after the model ends its movement but before it begins its Combat Action and must target the model charged. It seems like you would then be making these assault shots model by model, not after all of the models move?
