I was just listening to the most recent Tangential with Tsung Tsu podcast wherein they discuss understanding matchups. And while I'll fully admit there are an absolute ton of factions and armies that I've never seen, and models with whose rules I'm unfamiliar, I feel that there's more nuance to "understanding a match-up" than simply knowing the enemy models' rules.
Is it simply about understanding that they've got recursion and you don't have RFP, or knowing that you have mass stealth and they only have a single true-sight model that you'll want to snipe out ASAP? Or is there more to it than just this?
Seems like an interesting conversation to have.

I would say it is indeed more complex than that. It's not only about knowing their rules, but by extension about how the whole list works together: - what counters are there to your tech?
- what counters do you have to theirs?
- what is their win condition and do you have a reasonable answer for it? Like is your caster durable against assassinations or do you have enough throw away models to stall on scenario
- Do they have a good answer to your win condition?
- Is a lot of their essential tech tied to a solo that you can snipe out?
It's about knowing their rules for sure, but it's also about a deep understanding of how both their list and your own work and oppose each other.
Many lists are just variations of one you have already seen though and then it's good enough to just brush up on some specific rules.

Meh. "You lot, go punch (shoot) those things!" is about as deep as I care to go most days.

It's a good question, and something I still have trouble with myself. I do sometimes drop the wrong list.

what u usually do at list seleccion is look at their lists and u are liek oh crap because u dont know what either list does so teh best thing to do is to palay mydas and strum and dang so ur oppenentwont kno what ur armies do either and u can trick dem into dropping teh wrong list!!
