(Apologies for any formatting issues I'm doing this on mobile)
Main changes is a return to the Fel Caller over Valka and a switch from Ice Troll to Bouncer in Kolgrima. I found the champs needed Pathfinder more in a list where they can't use tactician to live in the same space as the rest of your army. The Bouncer was there out of paranoia about Ret - makes Rahn really unappealing into her and the shield guard can mess with some of their more gun oriented strategies. All in all I think the pair needs a bit more tinkering still bit I'm pretty happy for now. But enough about my issues, on to the matches!
Round 1 - Ret (Pit II)
Round 1 I got the matchup I've been waiting for since Ret CID. I am of the opinion that Goreshade4 is quite bad into double SotN and can really screw up their list selection. They had Vyros2 as their other list so I dropped Madrak expecting him to not drop Goreshade. Funnily enough that is exactly what he did. Discussing it afterwards he misunderstood Kolgrimas feat and thought it stopped charges as well. He wins the roll off and takes first.
I jam up with the raiders under Even Ground and take advantage of the GK to give some of them concealment. He plays pretty far back on one side and puts minifeated sents with dauntless resolve in my face. I clear basically all of them out and score 2 (almost score 3 but fail to break armor on the last Sentinel) and put up feat. He shuffles around and is ineffectual and I just score out.
He forgot to feat on top of 2 but his bigger problem was how far back he played, by limiting his vengeance and focusing fire he just really wasn't able to keep up on attrition due to how conservative he was. There's a balancing act with Madrak where if your opponent pushes too hard you table them but if they hold back too much you just win on scenario.
Round 2 - Protectorate (Standoff)
Opponent had Testament and Harbinger IIRC. Kolgrima was the obvious drop. He puts down Testament and wins the roll off and shoves super hard into me with ashen veil errants. I fire back with raiders but it blocks up my champs something fierce. I also misplace models in such a way that he scores 1 on bottom of 2 and an easy 2 cps on top of 3.
Feeling way behind I decided to go for the assassination. Was able to get Kolgrima the Bomber and 2 pygmies onto Testament and leave him on one box. I think I could have engineered a better run with some foresight (self sac messed things up a bit) or if I had placed better I could have gone for attrition / scenario quite well. But alas the player playing better pulls out the win.
Round 3 - Cryx (Spread the Net)
Opponent had Some and Gaspy3 (double inflictor and malice instead of 4 of the 9 slayers). He chooses Gaspy3 and I choose Madrak.
I win the rolloff which is a huge problem for Gaspy. He gives me a play to kill 3 slayers and cripple an inflictor on top of 2. My opponent has problems getting his Malice soul train online and with the help of some above average dice I run the table. Eventually bears maul to death a 0 camp gaspy but I could have gone for scenario if necessary.
Round 4 - Skorne (Invasion)
My opponent had two basically identical lists in Exalted theme with Zaal1 and Zaal2. I ended up dropping Madrak figuring he'd have to spend a lot of souls or Last Stand to actually hurt my stuff. I win the roll off elect to go first.
I spooked him into feating bottom of 1 and on turn 2 I have a plan of just waiting out his feat with mine. Unfortunately I am super out of it from jet lag and not much food and I just charge in with my GK and 3 champs but fail to kill the Supreme Guardian. I then bubble wrap to limit what he can do to my GK.
Despite his thresher picking up multiple souls from him he fails to kill the GK and things just unravel from there. He tries to clear a path for an assassination but can't get around the GK to Mage Sight Madrak and concedes.
Not my proudest game but im like 85 percent certain I blacked out for a few seconds in the middle of our game from sleep deprivation so I'll take the win.
Round 5 - Cryx (Mirage)
My opponent had Goreshade3 and I think Slayer spam. I put down Madrak and he goes with Goreshade3 which imo was a huge mistake. He wins the roll off and gives me first turn which again was a huge mistake to me.
I jam real hard and score 1 on his bottom of 2, then I score 4 on top of 3 by killing 6 bane warriors two bane riders a shrike and his objective. He played really far back anticipating a long game where he would mockery of life an attrition advantage. Again undercommittment to scenario lets Madrak take a fast win from bullying the board. But hey I was just glad to get food and a nap.
I'm going to leave it there for now, I'll post the day 2 matches when I get a chance tomorrow.
