It's funny, because on reddit there is a convo aboug themes being too restrictive and trolls are saying restrictions are cool, just make them meaningful. The kriel company split is an amazing idea, both functionally and thematically. After reading that one, it's all I can pretty much think about. I'm so sick of that tired spiel. "Themes are bad, cuz... themes are bad, mmkay?" Without themes, everyone's internal balance would be much worse, and each would play nothing but the three best casters and model/units. Imagine if every faction were more or less like Circle in the Bones-Only period. :P Just try it. Play a "no-themes allowed" tourney once as a novelty and you might have fun with it. Play two games a week with nobody in your meta using themes and you'll strangle each other before you finish the third month.

Seriously though, I can say themes are pretty integral to wmh game balance. And they've been around at least since mk2 (I can't say for mk1, since i didn't play then). I am looking for pirate trolls to go along with the sea king. Even if they're river raiders. After all, cryx has got to be getting their blighted trolls from somewhere, right? Does that slaughter guy have a trollblood equivalent, a foe from long ago who just won't die? New models: trollkin river raiders (melee/ranged crew with drag) Pyg ammo porters (single point FA2 solos that give +1ROF to a model b2b). Oceanborn Stone scribe Elder with 3 new stone warpings (salt skin grants amphibious, rainstorm removes flight, sea legs grants steady). Some named character solo or warlock to fill in back story with cryx dudes. Allows fennblades (play on words with Fens/Fennblade). Allows artillery units, whelps, scouts, skinner, fell caller, krielstone, chronicler, horgle1. Benefits? Two puddles (like snow banks). Artillery gains AD. Free models are solos, whelps. Models counting toward free points are units and light warbeasts (ever try to sail down a river with a Dire troll?).

I'm all for splitting Kriel Company in to two distinguished themes. As of now, there's really very little holding Kriel Company together thematically other than guns. Rather than another CID cycle that brings 6-8 new models for a single theme, I'd rather see Kriel Company and, say, Thornwood Irregulars established. Kriel Company gets Sluggers, Scattergunners, Sons of Bragg, Pygs, Weapon Crews, and battle engines. Thornwood Irregulars maybe just gets a blanket "Small and medium-based warrior models with Pathfinder" so they get Highwaymen, Scouts, Raiders, Fire Eaters, and Pygs. From there, you give 3-4 releases to each theme to help differentiate them and fill a few holes in list-building. I'd love to see Boomhowlers get a rework to really become the frontline for Kriel Company, and for a few options in each that make cracking armor less of a struggle (but not a breeze). Sadly Fire Eaters do not have Pathfinder, if only. I don't know that I'm sold on sepearately KC however I could easily see cutting out the Northkin stuff. Right now one of my biggest issue with KC is if I put in Raiders and/or the Hauler and/or the FEs I get to the point where a large portion of my army is Northkin and I'm wondering why I'm not just playing in SotN so I can have bears. As far as armor cracking goes... I could totally see giving Highwaymen Pistoleer (ala Sons of the Tempest). I also would not be against something extreme like excluding the stone from the theme but then adding a theme benefit to really pump up the offense, make it our glass cannon theme that plays way different from your typical Troll list.

I would love a theme that let me take Longriders, War Wagons, Maulers and Bombers together.
Give it a decent theme benefit like advance move and I could see some of our lesser used casters hitting the table.

Why can't we run all the buffalo and get bonuses for it?

I had wondered if Kriel Company might omit the stone and give everything concealment instead. Something like that, but- that would be really bad for running the Kings. I do think that there is something to the idea of splitting up Kriel Company but I'm sure the theme has its fans who would not like that. I for one would actually be okay with taking the Northkin stuff out even though SOTN is my favorite theme.
Ideally, we just add a new theme.
Highwaymen -All warlocks and non-character beasts allowed -Units and Solos that have guns but are not Northkin -Long Riders and Horthol -Trollkin Skinner -War Wagon
Benefits -Weapon Crews gain AD -Warbeasts gain Black Penny -There's no KSB but everything gains Concealment. -Each turn during your Maintenence Phase, choose one model or unit to gain either Snipe, Repo 3, or Pathfinder. -Minion Inclusion as per usual
Freebies One solo or weapon crew for every 20 points of units
Something like that maybe.
