whelp, I just ordered myself the starter box for GUARD, the Ares Mothership, and the Saucers/Pods/Hunter blister (the Vanguard/Hunter blister is out of stock). While I think, based upon the description, I'd probably be more comfortable with Terrasaurs, I figure I'm going to prefer painting Martians (as I'm currently painting Grymkin, and don't really want to paint more flesh at the moment). And painted models always attract more attention/interest than unpainted models. Did you get yourself extra blisters? The game doesn't start playing functionally until at least 1 monster and 15 units per side. Well...shit. No. I figured a starter box, and the equivalent for the other side, would be sufficient. Because that would make sense. Kinda like having a starter box for each faction would make sense.

Well, you will be able to play just fine. Generating Power Dice is going to be a little slow, that’s all.

Well, just got my models. On the one hand, they look quite nice. On the other, dear god does PP suck with sprues. I'm seriously considering busting out my dremel just to try and clean up the models, which is insane.

Get some flush cut spruce cutters and a fresh X-acto blade and you’ll be perfectly fine.

Nope, used a dremel. Worked quite well.
Normally a pair of nail clippers and a good X-acto blade work fine, but these were some thick chunks of sprue.
Anywho, that's done. Models assembled quite well, though I was reminded while building Defender-X how much I dislike when PP doesn't include directions to their models. It's not that he was overly complex (because he's really, really not), but still would be nice.
And I absolutely adore how easy the Martian models are (kinda cheating, as half of them are a single piece), and really like the looks of the flight stands.
Two questions, though: 1) do you find that super-glue fogs up the transparent bases/flight stands, and if so how do you recommend avoiding?
2) Am I correct in my current assessment that, given I have 2 Saucers, 2 Power Pods, a Hunter and the Ares Mothership, the Martians will be severely outgunned by the starter G.U.A.R.D. models? My impression from reading through the rules is the saucers/pods are purely support, which while useful at higher level games, will probably not serve well right now.

Fogging on clear plastic is caused by the fumes from the glue, so one way you can stop it from happening is to use a glue accelerator to dry the glue before it has a chance to fume. I did this with defender x and there wasnt any fogging. Otherwise there are glues out there that are fumeless and won't fog your base.

I just had a fan running nearby and put the models in the breeze after applying the glue.

I guess you will be a little outgunned, but it won’t matter? Four G-tanks have poor odds of successfully attacking a monster, especially if the G-tanks had to move to get into range.. Meanwhile, your Power Pods are getting you more Power Dice just by virtue of existing, freeing up your saucers to go annoy your G-tanks and at least stop them from securing buildings by being adjacent to the buildings. The saucers can’t actually abduct anything you own except for the repair truck, so harassment it is.

Wow. Sky Sentinel’s “extra boost dice for Faction models with Flight” ability is totally sweet!
It might even make up for the fact that the GUARD base’s ability works for literally anyone of any faction and agenda. : p

Well, after listening to y'all for so long I've finally decided to pull the trigger. I just this minute placed an order for the GUARD starter and Godzilla the Terrasaurs. Shame there isn't a Terrasaurs starter. I will be honest: I'm not enthused about the idea of paying $15-$20 per building (especially since international shipping is so expensive these days) so I didn't order any. Once I figure out how the game actually works and what buildings actually do, I'll decide on the next step. I guess the next question is which colourscheme to use, this: or this: Well, I'll probably do Defender X in one and, if the game actually catches on, Sky Sentinel in the other. So... which one is more suitable for which scheme?

Go with the Mazinger Z for both. The details on Defender X and Sky Sentinel are sufficiently different that you'll still be able to tell them apart.

I'm not a huge fan of painting the same colour scheme over and over: gets boring. I prefer to try different things. I think I'll paint Defender as Mazinger; Tetsujin has a jetpack so he's closer to Sky Sentinel than Mazinger is. Well, we'll see: it's a while in the future yet (got some other stuff I'm working on painting right now).

One could easily invert the theme if one wanted to keep the colors and general arrangement.

Just played my first game today (well, half a game, played with a student during lunch) and gotta say, I'm a fan.
I can see why more than 5 units are required, though I doubt (and from watching videos online, it seems to bear out) that the max number of units (15/20/25) is rarely, if ever, needed.

If you’re playing cagey, and focus on securing all the buildings on the rear of your edge of the map, it’s definitely possible to have at least 15 units spawned at once. Part of the benefit of having extra units in your reserves is so you can swap out your army composition, going from say defensive (G-tanks) to offensive (Strike Fighters) pretty easily.
