I've always loved the model look for the Desert Hydra, even if it is extremely annoy to put together. I'm wondering if there is any validity to actually fielding the model, however. The pros to the model are easy to see:
super anti-shooty animus 5, 6 inch corrosion causing sprays OR 5 base PS 18 melee attacks (a total of 9 melee attacks at pow 18 possible without spells x.x) No back arc base speed 5 (in a world where our damage dealing beasts are speed 4, speed 5 on a garg is actually impressive) SUPER regenerative with Hyper Regeneration and Snacking
It's negatives are also pretty easy to see as well:
Max threat 15 and only if you use the 10 inch spray Point Cost, considering he's 4 points more than 2 turtles 9 def, 19 arm with 52 boxes. 1 rounding him is definitely not unheard of.
I'm pretty sure the only way to make him worth his points is amping up his armor to 22+ with spells/animi in order to keep him healthy for the next round where you can heal the bajesus out of him. You'd also need to run him with a caster that can take care of that horrid 15 inch threat. With the support pieces we have it should be doable, but I'm pretty sure you'd have to dedicate too many points to making him valid to make him valid, especially when you can just run 2 turtles that can pretty much handle their own.

This is the Kaiju list from the Warmachine Discord. Not written by me, i think Pook was its maker but i'd have to double check. Credit to whoever wrote it.
Skorne Army - 75 / 75 points [Theme] Imperial Warhost
[Xerxis 2] Xerxis, Fury of Halaak [+28] - Agonizer [0(6)] - Agonizer [0(6)] - Basilisk Krea [0(7)] - Desert Hydra [38] - Tiberion [22] Bog Trog Mist Speaker [4] Paingiver Beast Handlers (min) [5] Siege Animantarax [17] Siege Animantarax [17]
This list tears things up. It looks absolutely stupid on paper but then each piece puts in so much work especially with the feat you can kill a huge amount of models per piece and layered shooting defenses is very nice. You also outthreat most melee lists when 11" w/ overtake is your shortest threat
Hydras amazeballs in that list

because Xerxis only has 5 fury, all his beasts are pretty tight packed to begin with. The hydra subtracts 3 inches off normal ranged shooting, forcing them to get closer in order to hit things that are already being given +2 def and arm against shooting. If they get any closer, though, they'll be right in range for the animantarax's who already have a threat range of 20 inches. Tibs is something you keep tucked away behind the huge bases until the time is right to let him off his leash. Since extollers cannot be taken with IWH, the mist speaker makes up for it, passing around magical and eyeless sight.
Does not look dumb to me in the slightest, especially with finding a way to take a desert hydra and both derps at the same time. This list also cares little about terrain, which is a nice change for any heavy hitting Skorne lists.

The assembly and painting barrier though...
I did X2 as a showpiece model when he came out. I think I'm still traumatized, I haven't touched a 120mm based model since.

yeah, the hydra may be one of the coolest looking models but cool means lots of little details and more pieces than a lego castle x.x;

Xerxis2 is definitely a fun caster for a Hydra, but I have also seen him with Morghoul1. Faced it in a tournament once and got that bastard to 1 box on feat turn. It was so infuriating. Regenerated and murdered 2 heavies and I lost of course. So close on that one, but of course it's a question list and I was not able to answer it that time, or at least the dice said so.
I think DOA with Morghoul1 and a Hydra has a lot of possibilities in it and I want to put it on the table, but I think it requires a lot of dedication to make it work right. I don't really have the time with just trying to get legs with Rasheth and keep practicing Zaadesh2. I have so many list ideas for Morghoul1 and 2 in DOA though it's just paralyzing. Such a fun theme to tinker around with. The fact that Croak Raiders are immune to Corrosion, so they can bubble wrap the Hydra and he can spray through them, is very enticing to me.

indeed, in DOA you can get rage on top of Morg1's +2 str and the whippers +2 str x.x combined 7 str makes his heads hit for 25 + 2 dice with a possible 9 strikes with 2 inch reach x.x Seriously if you can get him up there he's absolutely OP. Give him just a bit of armor and he's a Female Dog to kill due to his regeneration abilities, as you experienced. 1 box turns into about 15 or so

I must have done something wrong. I played the list Challenger mentioned against my brother in law (with small changes post-CID; he was playing my wife's Circle) and pulled out a turn 2 assassination with the Desert Hydra. It might be worse that Skorne is actually his army.
First turn I ran it up so that with 9" deployment and 14" run, it was 23" up the board. At which point we were both going 'how TF do you stop this?'. Next turn, I popped X2's feat and trampled forwards through a forest, gain LOS to his 'caster. Five 8" sprays later, the caster was a little puddle.
That can't be right, can it? I guess he could've sacrificed more to stop it, but I think I still would've been way up on attrition.

You can't trample through the forest and spray afterwards. In order to perform a power attack, you must sacrifice your initial combat attacks, which means you sacrifice each head's attack. You also can't buy additional ranged attacks after, so unless there are targets in melee range, there's nothing left for a warbeast to do after trampling. Unless it has Dual Attack (giving you an initial melee AND ranged attacks, allowing you to sacrifice the initial melee attacks to trample, then use your initial ranged attacks after that). Which the Hydra does not have.

Cool! Good to know that bit on trampling. (And I've been reminded by my opponent that the Desert Hydra actually charged one of his Warpwolves trying to defend his caster and sprayed 4 times, not 5. My bad.)
