Taking a brief break from my normal Frozen Cryx collection to put together a Protectorate battlebox for a friend. I'm not happy with how the golden metallics turned out on the Revenger, but I think I made up for it with the Crusader. Also really annoyed at the frosted effect I accidentally got with a bad can of sealer. This color scheme, and painting with light colors in general, is a bit new to me. So any suggestions are more than welcome. That goes double for turning the letters into a better fire effect. Naturally, more images can be found here: nightmareempire.wordpress.com/2018/06/11/painting-repenter/nightmareempire.wordpress.com/2018/06/11/painting-crusader/

Huh. I did not realize that was a fix. I'll give it a try this week and see how it goes.

The olive oil sadly did not help much. It returned some of the sharpness of the colors, but didn't get rid of the odd texture or particles. So in this case, I think the issue was 10% humidity (fixed by olive oil), 90% old can that needs replaced. Oh well. The effect isn't too bad.
Either way, thank you for the tip. Will definitely be helpful for the future in this environment.

Like I said, reduces the effect. Doesn't always completely cure it; I've had mixed results myself. Which is better than nothing. Btw how did you apply it?
These days I always apply spray varnish outdoors with no backstop on warm days that aren't too windy or humid. I let the can and model warm up for a bit first, while shaking the can for a couple of minutes. After spraying I keep the model outside for five minutes before moving it to a different environment. If I have any doubts I do a test first.

Finished up High Exemplar Kreoss. Been working on improving every aspect of this color scheme. Better off-white shading (Idrian Flesh), better bronze, deeper shading, less reliance on Armor Wash, and more red in the flame runes. Also got new clearcoat, which fixed the frosting that I got on the Crusader. Three models down, one to go. Any suggestions on how to improve the furnace glow or anything else that I can improve on this color scheme?

Looking good!
I don't know if this will work, but you could try darkening the area inside the furnace before brightening back up to the glowy center? So it's normal metal, cast light (or possibly darken a bit between the normal metal and the area being lit up by the glow), then the inner sides of the furnace/exhausts are dark, then you brighten up to the hottest center glowing area.
One issue I see is that the chain and spiked ball are a bit too uniform; if you could add some variety here with different coloured metals (and maybe more agressive shading and highlighting) it would help it look a bit more interesting. Maybe the ball itself is brass, possibly with steel spikes?

I use some variation on that for almost all my bludgeoning implements.

Something like my Decimator's saw housing: reasonably similar, yes. I can only find one model with it, but I thought I had more. I will edit with a picture if I can. I was aiming for something like the P3 blighted gold at the time, if that helps.

Finished up the last of the protectorate models that I've got. Also gave the Repenter a second pass to fix up the horrible yellow metal. Though it still ended up a bit muddy between the too-many layers and bad clearcoat which is why it still stands out a bit. I think if I were to do this again, I would have bought a pot of bronze paint, been a bit more careful with my whites, and done something more with the bases. nightmareempire.wordpress.com/2018/08/11/painting-protectorate-battlebox/

Very nice. I do think throwing something like a bit of sand or grass on the bases would be nice.

Sand seems like a good option here. I'll see if I can get some materials for it. I have a lot of money invested into various dirt, ice, water, and snow experiments but nothing whatsoever for sand yet.
