It seems like the best thing to take with that kit is the trenchers, which puts you in Kingmakers. That being said, I totally agree with the arguments that Kingmakers really doesn't give him anything other than access to trenchers. It seems like he doesn't really fit, which seems to go with his design of "Strip the cygnar paint job, paint him like a steelhead". Even absent theme restrictions Idrians would be in contention with Trenchers; +2 dmg at range and +3 in melee is nothing to sneeze at particularly with a caster that buffs melee damage but can't provide pathfinder. Blur/deflection/armbuffs mean Stryker isn't exactly hurting for a cloud wall either. Once you add in access to all the irregulars benefits it ain't even close.

Sure, but we're back to Idrians on paper with Prey. I hear what you're saying but lets try to avoid another journey down that well traveled path.

W/o prey, pathfinder, repo, even damage at range, and +1 in melee still swing it to idrians for me (at least in the case of stryker). And then there's the irregulars advantages of aiyana/ragman access, free UA's, an advance moving heavy per unit, etc.

Idrians, trenchers please. How about some Nyss!
(cries softly over his fancy based, head swap'd and reposed Nyss Hunters)

But Ambush! In a theme that is no longer relevant! How many more nice things do they need?!

Boomhowler and Co are so sad atm. Their Spd and survivability have been gutted (which was why they were played), their offensive output is as lacklustre as it always was, the new Cacophony is ok, but it cannot redeem them, especially when they are 17 friggin points.

I’ve thought about trying to run them with Cephalyx, more specifically Cyphon. Not sure if the buffs are enough, but they do give him a little bit of anti-magic play he doesn’t other wise have. Also more medium bases for him to semi-hide behind.

Cyphon might not be the worst choice for them, as Blur could help keep Boomhowler alive. Would you go for a min or max unit?

I don’t actually own them and I’ve been dragging my heals wondering if it’s worth getting them. I only play dwarves and Cephalyx now and I’ve been on the fence if I really need / want them.

If you don't own them already then I wouldn't bother, they are not a cheap unit money-wise.

Crucible Guard at least indicates they might be willing to allow more 4+ tough back into the game, which would be appreciated both for boomies directly and on other units which would increase the support value of Reveille. Boomies aren't too bad in CG where they can attach Dr Morely for his nearly armywide supertough minifeat and all his great field work abilities. Run them behind a wall of assault troops providing supertough and spell protection, Reveille the survivors back up for the charge then do some work themselves with PS14 charges before any debuffs/caster buffs.
