After realizing that I started talking about Gastone with Tempest Blazers over in the Ashlynn thread, I decided to create a thread just for Gastone.
I played him once right after the CID closed with him in it and I have barely played him since. I pulled him out this week and made some exceptionally bad choices that really cost me the game. I recognized my faults so I can learn from those, but I'm really looking to get some good discussions about him going.
Who here has played him extensively? What tips do you have? Is he better in Llaelese Resistance or Irregulars? When running him in LR, what units do you bring along from which faction? Are there any weird synergies that you have discovered that work well? Is there a specific unit combination you want to try out but want to see if others have done it already?
So to get it started, I was wondering if anyone has tried Tempest Blazers with him. Between Ghost Walk and his feat, it feels like he can deliver them into your opponent's back lines quite easily. But what are your thoughts/experiences with them?

I went to get him the other day only to find the nearest stores (2 new ones popped up) don't sell warmachine anymore... So he has clearly ruined this whole game for me and everyone else!
On a more serious note, I am leaning more IR theme but I have not tested him at all so its just theory. The gunmage themed army from the Ashlynn in LR thread did spark my interest under Gastone though.

I have played a few games with him in Irregulars, this list has gone through a couple iterations, but this is my latest version
Mercenary Army - 75 / 75 points [Theme] The Irregulars
(Crosse 2) Lieutenant Crosse, Resistance Fighter [+29] - Mangler [15] - Mangler [15] - Reinholdt, Gobber Speculator [0(4)] Anastasia di Bray [3] Eilish Garrity, the Occultist [0(5)] Kell Bailoch [0(5)] Ragman [0(4)] Horgenhold Forge Guard (max) [16] Idrian Skirmishers (max) [15] - Idrian Skirmisher Chieftain & Guide [5] Kayazy Eliminators [5] Kayazy Eliminators [5] Lady Aiyana & Master Holt [8] Lynus Wesselbaum & Edrea Lloryrr [5] Press Gangers (max) [12]
The two advantages of Irregulars over Resistance is that Reinholdt and Lynus & Edrea provide Gastone with a solution to Stealth and clouds (also on non Death Dealer turns the extra shot from Reinholdt is great), Irregulars also lets you take cheap bodies for Life Bound (Press Gangers in this instance).
The rest of the list is the usual damage fixers and units that are good of their own accord.
The big advantage of Resistance is the repo 3 from Gibbs every turn for Gastone, but I have been able to keep Gastone safe for now.

There is nothing stopping you from getting this bonus outside of LR. Yes there are other solos and units that are usually needed over him, but if you really want it, take him.

crossy2 with aiyana and hot and edea and lunis is way worse so u gots to palay iregulars
also he just isn't good enough in general to make a competitive pairing despite not being that bad

I want to like him best in LR with Zealots, but the problem I keep running into is what else? I'm reserving judgment until CID happens, because errants are poised to be a great addition.

The base unit for Errants are still really good, it is just their UA that is dross. Why they don't just have Sacred Ward instead of stupid Purity I will never know.
The Officer should have Tactics: Pathfinder, the Standard should have Granted: Sacred Ward, and then maybe a mini-feat like Quickwork or Repo 3".
The only slight Skornergy is that if they have Lifebound on them and Self Sacrifice, Gastone would not get the soul.

In any situation in which I'm running Gastone in LR, the Zealots have Lifebound and the Errants are (improved from CID) doing the bulk of the combat/contesting. I get your point though, they really need some tweaking, but are so close.

If PP would just improve the Steelhead cavalry, I'd like to run him fairly Steelhead heavy as one the 'Dark Magic' style lists I like now and again. Probably not a tournament winner, but might be fun:
Crosse2 -Nomad -Mariner -Bucaneer -Reinholdt
2 x max Steelhead halberdiers Max Steelhead cavalry Alexia1 Aiyana and Holt Lynus and Edrea 2x Eliminators
Eilish Eiryss1 Ragman
Lifebound + Alexia1 gives double-benefits from the Steelheads - soul to Crosse, corpse to Alexia1. Dauntless Resolve to make the cavalry rather tough (now they just need an improvement to let them do something when they reach the enemy).
Nomad + Bucaneer could become 15 point jack + Tinker, or Toro + 4 point solo. Would require playtesting.
Could be fun, and I want excuses to have Steelheads and Alexia on the table together again.

The idea should be that the Errants get the Arm Buff, and the shield guard spell goes onto Zealots anyways.

Lets make a better version of those! Cav units? Buff em! Steelheads are mercs right? EVERY FACTION SHOULD BE ABLE TO TAKE THEM! Buff the steelhead cav/riflemen and/or let merc theme forces have them? Nah.
